I love still lifes and have been working on this one on and off for a year, working on the textures and trying to find just the right instrument models. Music has been important to my family. The violin represents my Father's love for music. He actually builds violins. I textured the violin here using a violin and bow he gave me several years ago as a reference. I can't play it, but I can appreciate it as a work of art my Dad made. He puts about 10 coats of a polymer on the surface, one coat at a time and sanding it smooth after each coat. When he's finished the surface is like glass. Dad plays the violin "bluegrass fiddle style" with some retired friends of his. He's 84 years old, an amazing guy. The Cornet represents my love for music. I actually own one of these, too, and played it in the high school band. I didn't keep it up, though. I play guitar a little bit, not very well, but wouldn't give it up for anything. I'm sure many of you also love music, I believe most artists do, and would be interested in hearing about your musical interests. This pic is 100% Bryce procedural textures except for the signature and the sheet music which is 2D pics. There is a 1024 version of this in my gallery if you'd like to see a little more detail. The sheet in the middle is Bach, the one to the right is "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (Appropriately, it IS cold outside, here), I forgot what the other one is. Just felt good about this one and wanted to share. Tjohn

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

Very Real, I like the Violin and the curtain mat.

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Tue, 19 November 2002 at 6:24 AM

Great job! I have the highest respect for violin/fiddle players. I love music and play the guitar also, although I play like shit I would be lost without my guitars. I have a black Epiphone Les Paul electric and a couple of cheap acoustics. I love tube amplifiers too, especially from the sixties.

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 19 November 2002 at 6:46 AM

The textures are excellent. I gave up on playing guitar years ago. I had a cheap acoustic which I left in my hometown. But I still cannot live in a quiet house. :-)

Violence? Voilence? ... oh Violins - never mind! tjohn, Looks really good! Gimme a "...guitar that's tuned good and firm feelin'women...". Saw a cheap Fender Strat for about $200.00, a revenge item for my noisy neighbors? My luck they'd like it. - TJ

Excellent use of textures - I'm with GG on tube amps & acoustic music.... Only thing i can think you might want to try would be to do a modified type of HDRI - or have something off camera that the brass texture could use to create a reflection.... Cool work as it stands now. best, hewsan

Great looking still life.

lsstrout ( ) posted Tue, 19 November 2002 at 12:46 PM

I love still lifes too, thanks for sharing this one, it's beautiful. My musical background: I played clarinet in school, but never kept up with it (I hate practicing). I have tinkered with both piano and a standard guitar, but find my small hands make certain chords difficult if not impossible. Someday I might pursue more music, but for now I'll stick to listening. BTW "Baby it's cold outside" is one of my favorite songs. Lin

Some of you all should form a musical group - The Bryce 5 Four or something like that. - TJ

"A violin is a precision instrument, you have to get your fingers in exactly the right place or it sounds like @#$%..;) " I've got the right notes now after more than 12 years. I've played a whole piece of music with only doubles during one of my last concerts. It's very cool once you've got it, but it takes a lot of practice. (If anyone's interested: the piece I played was ude 85 from Sitt)

Does every one play multiple instruments here? We are a creative community are we. Maybe I should start playing the piano again...

I used to play the piano. Now I just goof around on midi keyboards. Thanks for the curtain tutorial. Now all I need is the velcro tutorial to complete my set. SHONNER

Well, first you create about a thousand hooks and attach them to a squashed cube. Then you make about a thousand loops and... wait a minute, you were joking, weren't you? :^)
