Subject: BVHMotions

When I apply or import a BVH motion file to a figure say a P4 man it asks "how are the arms aligned in this motion" The choices are Along X axis (usually highlighted) and along Z axis. I usually click X axis and "Scale Automatically". After the motion pose is applied my figure shoots almost out of sight to the bottom of the screen, and sometimes completely disappears. Can someone advise me if there are other settings I need to apply? arrow1

No, you're doing it correctly. It's just that the BVH file has set the figure's hip X,Y,Z coords to be somewhere else in your poser space. You just have to find him. Back out, turn around, etc. until you do. To move him back to center, you can adjust the X,Y,Z of the "body"; there are some gotchas when doing this, but if you're careful, it usually works.

speaking of BVH files, is there a way to tell what files work with what characters?? I bought the motion pack froma DAZ recently and some of the figures get all distorted (toes and feet curl, hands curl, arms are going in the wrong direction , etc. ) or is there a simple way of correcting this before you test the animation? I have set the arms axis in both X and Z with similar results. I have written DAZ on this but I haven't heard anything back from the tech dept. Sorry to butt in on your thread arrow but, thought I would take a chance.

only X or Z is used for a single figure, different mocap sys got difetent axis. out of sight ? because the mocap actor is always moving around. use the one called call poser-friendly BVH.

In P5 there is a Python Script to bring the figure to the ground.
After you load the bvh go to Window/Python Scripts/Utility Funcs/DropFigAllFrames.

It will prompt choose yes.

It works for me.

Theoretically, BVH files will work with every figure; they are supposed to be standard. As usual, the reality is that BVH files can vary quite a bit in how well they work with a particular figure depending upon what motion house and motion software created them. There are multiple implementations of BVH motion capture systems that differ in their final results despite BVH being a "standard". The files will vary in what the call the body groupings, and to what extent they move the groupings. You can do some manual editing on the files (as they are ASCII) but it requires some minimum experience with a text editor. As mentioned, the best way to avoid headaches is to only use "poser-approved" BVH files; there are a couple web sites that sell them (as well as DAZ3D).
