Subject: Now what am I going to do?

I was going to buy Carrera from Metacreations. Now that Adobe bought it, should I wait and see what they do with it? Do you think that Adobe will make Carrera 1.0 upgradible or do you think they will come out with something new?

There is always going to be an upgrade for a application in order to meet consumers/industries wants and needs. I originally purchased RayDream 5.5 and recieved the upgrade which was Carrera for only $99. I just hope they don't do like with Photoshop 5.0 and come out with a upgrade within ashort time after 5.0's release. However I checked out Adobe's website and have not found any mention about a purchase like in the Metacreations press release. But, for Carrera's price, it is a powerful app. On the next level you are talking software in the $1000's. But I think I understand your fear about completely changing the product and you are stuck with a product that never upgrades. If Adobe (or whoever) did purchase Carrera and want's to get into the 3D market they would lose alot of Carrera user's if they completely changed the product and never offered registered users an alternative. Anyhow, I have Carrera and am happy with it so far and intend to cross that bridge when I get there. This business can be a real crapshoot sometimes anyhow. Hope I was able to help.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to get Carrera now. I have a feeling that Adobe will doing some sort of software link to photoshop with Carrera. As far as the plug-ins, your right, I'm sure Adobe will in time introduce a whole slew of stuff. Eventally, a complete new version of Carrera will probably be kind of pricey. (with all the add-ons and plug-ins, etc.)I think for the first time I will get in on the ground floor and ride the wave. Knowing Adobe, I believe, now that Photoshop is more or less and industry standard for image manipulation, I'm hoping that maybe the same may eventually happen to Carrera at the low end level.

One other thing to remember is Adobe's seamless integration. Since Carrara is not only a modeling program, but also an animation program, Adobe will likely make it much more AfterEffects friendly, allowing it to be easily used in the video production environment. This, alone, will provide a pretty substantial base of users; virtually every industrial video shop has AfterEffects, but not so many have Lightwave or 3DS. With a base of users, we all can look forward to a lengthy product life, lots of plug-in development and many happy revisions.
