Rex, when you installed Photoshop did you associate some of the "graphic types" (JPG, GIF, BMP, PSD, TIF...) to Photoshop? As Phily asked, are you using AOL? Mostly this problem occurs because of the browser and not necessarly PS, but rears up when certain file association are switched to PS. :) retrocity
AOL has a default setting (see below)that you need to change. "Web Graphics tab lets you adjust how you view pictures you see on the Web. The default "Use Compressed Graphics" setting will work just fine for most people. This uses special AOL technology to compress the a Web site's images and transmit them to you faster. However, if you want to save any of the images you encounter and use them in desktop publishing or other graphics programs, you'll probably want to turn this off. Your browsing will be a little slower, but you'll get the graphics in a form compatible with other software" You need to click "never compress graphics". Your browser may have the same problem.
Well, not sure if this will help, but... Sometimes, when I'm trying to save an image from a webpage, it's marked as a jpg, but can only be saved as a bitmap. What I've found is that this occurs when the jpg hasn't fully loaded, or stopped loading. Often, hitting the refresh button and trying again will allow me to save the image in its proper format. ~DM
