well there is a lot to know about making realistic terrains. the first thing to do is get aquainted with the terrain editor. This means just messing around and seeing what everything dose. especially try out all the different fractals. the link above links to some tips & tricks about the terrain editor that are "hidden". the next part about making realistic terrains is the texturing. there is an extremely good tutorial on that here: http://www.bryceanworlds.com/pages/tips_tricks.html that is an extremely helpful tutorial. and the key to making realistic anything is ultimately practice. if you dont like the terrain editor so much and you happen to be using a mac then look at this alternet program: http://www.bsmooth.de i unfortunatly do not use a mac so i have not had the pleasure of using this program but from the looks of it.. id say its pretty cool. hope that was helpful -paul

Practice! Practice! Practice! The first chapter of the bryce book has a tutorial about making a terrain with a lake. There are lots of pictures in black and white that show the basic controls. lots of good tutorials that show how to use the texture and terrain controls can be seen at the petersharpe tutorial link above. The waterfall one can be very helpful to you. Take the tools and go through them. Make a terrain by clicking on the mountain icon. Press the M button to choose different materials for the terrain. Press the E button to bring up the terrain editor. Click your mouse over each bitton and roll it left and right. Watch what happens to your mountain. Make small changes on just one mountain to learn what your tools do. Then you can start adding multiple mountains, hills, rocks, trees,

The fractals and erosion sliders can add lot's of relism. Use them with care and try, try and try again and eventually you get terrains of wich you think 'Wow! this is really looking cool' and you use them.

Dude, you CAN'T make realistic stuff in Bryce, especially not environments... (just playing!) I've been using filters to create weird terrains, especially KPT 3's Spheroid Designer. Check it out on this image... It's just a few terrains, some fogs and clouds, and patience...!
