the problem occured in the default scene so i don't think its a slave issue but thanks for everyones help and advice

hmmm
seems to be an intermitent fault, i remember this happening once before but a restart cured it.
In Lesbentley's picture, it's the hand sign in a cross "Dolly along x &/or z""
I thought it might have been an error in the "preferred state" setup

Quote - before you increase the size , select the shadowcam for the light and see how big an area it covers, you may want to zoom it in to cover only your render area.

hmmm
taking off the animated lights and increasing the map size to 1024 didn't work (map size was originally 256, gonna try again with 2048)

hmmm it's quite hard to see what i'm talking about from these stills but his face does flicker
