Hi Anna,
Keith is right...when they speak of 300 ppi, that means 300 pixels per inch. To calculate your render size, multiply the inches of the width and the inches of the height of your print size by 300.
For example, an A1 is 594mm x 841mm (23.4 x 33.1 inches) - so:
23.4 x 300 = 7020
33.1 x 300 = 9930
So to render an A1 at 300ppi, you would need to render the image at 7020 x 9930.

Thread: Fractals and spirituality. | Forum: Fractals
This is very interesting...I have been reading two books the last few months that touch on just this subject..."The Spiritual in Twentieth-Century Art" by Roger Lipsey and "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" by Wassily Kandinsky.
Kandinsky speaks of the "inner need" of the artist. Very interesting as he touches on why we create, and particulary why we create art. He draws strong parallels between art and music. One line that I found particularly interesting was "It is the conviction that nothing mysterious can ever happen in our everyday life that has destroyed the joy of abstract thought." Cool, no?
Lipsey's book looks at the writings and philosophies of this century's modern artists...from Mondrian to Klee to Picasso and may, many others. They all express the idea that they are just "conduits"...creative wonders passing through them to the canvas.
If fact, Klee is quoted: "Everything vanishes around me, and works are born as if out of the void. Ripe, graphic fruits fall off. My hand has become the obedient instrument of a remote will."
Can you identify with that, Rykk? I know I can...
FWI...you can read Kandinsy's book online:

And Lipsey's book is at Amazon...

Patti makes an excellent point! Funky computer, bad vision...sometimes there are extenuating circumstances. I do think, however, that David's initial idea of images being "spoiled by poor colour choices" is just that...a case where a some deliberate consideration to color could make an image more aesthetically pleasing. With respect to importing UF gradients into Apo, I just tried this and it worked fine: 1) Copy UF .ugr file 2) Paste into Apo gradient folder (in my case it is C:Program FilesApophysis 2.0Gradients) 3) In Apo, open gradient browser (File/Gradient Browser) and click on the little folder lower right. Browse to the UF gradient file. This help?

I would love constructive criticism. You can tell me my work sucks, and I'll tell you to kiss my ass.
The we have a good chuckle and finish our cokes...
Seriously, I agree with the topic of color. I think it would behoove all of us, and particulatly those that are new to the idea, to spend a little time going over some color theory. There is a reason that colors look good or bad together. Designers have made millions understanding color theory. And you don't need a lot to make a diff...just take a few minutes to get familiar with some of the concepts.
Speaking of color basics...here are a few good links:

it must be pretty tough to be a moderator of such a big fractal community on her own.<<< We are all busy, no? I do the UF group over at DA and it is very time-consuming. I spend about 2 or 3 hours every day keeping that group going. I am sure she would reaaaaallllllyyyy appreciate it if someone would send her a note offering to help. All you need is just a little free time and maybe some very basic knowledge of HTML. G

Speaking of Janet, she has a third class coming up that does just that...addresses the "art" of fractals.

The beauty of the learning curve of UF is that it diminishes the fractal "generica" that you see with Apophysis.
Lyne, you had mentioned, "I almost wish there was a CLASS for UF that I could go to...even on line..." and Stephi mentioned Janet Parke's online UF classes. I just went through her masking class and it was PHENOMENAL! The class was very in-depth, but taught very well. Janet works hands on and closely with the students, plus you can go at your own pace. Right now she has two classes, "Working with Ultra Fractal" and "Ultra Fractal Masking Techniques"
They are $25 for a 7 week course. And the knowledge gained is priceless. You will definitely understand how to work UF through these courses.

Use the "Curriculum" link to find her classes.
Just my two cents....
