Refresh refers to the speed to which your video card will refresh the display. It affects the flicker rate of the monitor. The faster the refresh, the less your monitor will flicker. Refresh rate is measured in hertz and generally 75HZ is pretty good. Most display adapters offer two other settings which are usually "Default" (60hz-75hz) or "Optimal" which sets the refresh to the fastest rate that the detected (installed) monitor can handle. Some LCD projectors cannot handle certain refresh rates but I haven't had too much problem with modern monitors. The refresh may also change the visual size of your display since it affects both the horizontal and vertical frequencies. I usually set mine to the "Optimal Setting" but it doesn't hurt to play around and see which better suites you unless you have a VGA rather than SVGA monitor. Also if you have the improper drivers installed for your monitor, you may see adverse results. My guess is that if you don't see a problem in flicker rate on your monitor, you should be good to go ;). Refresh rate won't change any performance in your machine, renderings etc... though. If you do video editing, however, it is better to use the optimal refresh rate when outputting to video tape or any other external video recording device. ----Will
Thread: More memory for poser or upgrade CPU? | Forum: Poser Technical
Just always remember that Virtual Memory uses hard drive space as memory so you will see a bit of decrease in your hard drive space depending on how large your HD is. Whatever your minimum is set to is what windows will reserve from the hard drive for the page file (the file that is used for Virtual Memory). The maximum setting allows windows to increase the page file size as necessary (if necessary). Hope that helps you to understand a bit better. :) ----Will

Yeah Mike I'll swear by the ATI cards. They are great cards for anything 3D. Be it games or renderings from hi end 3D applications, ATI is my recommendation. If you set your virtual mem to those figures, you should see a good increase in performance... less lock-ups and crashes due to running out of mem. For even better performance, I'd recommend defragmenting your hd once a month even if windows says it doesn't need it. Your hd won't need to work as hard then. :)
Thread: More memory for poser or upgrade CPU? | Forum: Poser Technical
Yep, I build PCs and am a technician for Purdue University. RAM is the key. Your 750mhz processor should be fine. Another idea would be to upgrade your video RAM or video card. I use ATI cards almost exclusively. I would suggest maybe a 32mb or 64mb ATI Radeon. I, myself, use the ATI ALL IN WONDER due to it's awesome video capture/output capabilities. ;) The machine I use is a dual board operating on 2 P3 733mhz processors and with 1gb of sdram. I'll soon be upgrading it to 1.5gb of ram. This machine is faster than my brother's 1.4 ghz P4 but then my ram is more than double his. Also under the performance tab in "system" (under control panel) change your machine to "network server" and change the virtual memory to use a min of 1-2gb of hd space and max of half of your free HD space. This will boost performance dramatically. No wise tech allows windows to manage the virtual memory ;) Just my thoughts, ----Will
Thread: Announcement from Curious Labs | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Aye, much like a lot of corporate controlled software companies whom release a product before it has all of the boogers cleaned out of it. P5 was doomed from the start because of this and the original Eula compounded their problems. If they'd beta tested P5 more thoroughly and listened more closely to the end-user and didn't rush it's release they may have faired better. I don't think everyone is gonna throw out their copies of P4, Pro Pack or P5 just because CL is possibly going down. The market is there and will remain. Poser will be either be picked up by another company or replaced by an even more conventional application, but regardless of how it goes or where it goes, the content market will always be here. :)

Sharen, My guess is some handshake between R'osity and CL and Content Paranoids. ;) ---Kei
Thread: Merchants beng banned headsup!! | Forum: Community Center
For me this is a matter of principle. The trust relationship is being degraded between the upper admin and the merchants. I do not have products elsewhere nor do I own my own brokerage. But where is R'osity without those merchants who do and have helped build this business? These other merchants and artists ARE NOT my competitors. They are my friends and family. If you are going to make them eat in the doghouse because of other affiliations (whilst their money is still used to support this business) then I must say I'm going out to eat in the doghouse with them. It's an illogical and unethical move that wreaks of discrimination and other, possible, underlying agendas. Geeez, ok we'll take your money but you can't sit with us. Take a seat on the back of the bus, buddy but you still have to pay the same fare. Sound familiar? ---Kei
Thread: Problem Hiding Parameter Dials | Forum: Poser Technical
I see. I think I understand. I'll have to play around with this. Sounds tedious as hell but would be worth it in the end. Yeh, Hidden 1 should work but yer right. Damn. There are some custom morphs that I created for my char and wished to hide them but the hidden 1 just isn't happening. I believe at one time it did. I can't remember , but I think about a year ago I somehow hid a dial, but can't remember what vers of poser I was using. Oh well. Always more than one way to skin a vicky. :) ---Keihan

Yah, tedious is the word LOL. Thanks Jaager. This may help with my char. Thanks much. I release her to beta testers tonite, simply as a CR2 for now. Yah, I guess I didn't phrase that correctly about the settings of the Parameter dials. What I meant is that the values aren't visible to the user and they can still adjust the individual dials if they would like (of course taking some too far, as we know, has serious side effects). But having the FBM would allow them to retain the char. For example, if someone tweaked a chit load of params and the wished to get the char back to the way she should look (without reloading the cr2) the would just set all param values to zero and the named FBM to 1. The char would be back to her initial state and they wouldn't have to, possibly, redo a pose by loading the CR2 again. I like the sounds of your method using a pose file. Are there any good tuts out there on the technical aspects of doing that? Or perhaps you can point me to one of the free Characters and I can look through the file. Err these are for V2 though correct? Working with V1 at the moment. Thanks again your information has sparked a great number of ideas for future work on my char :). ---Keihan

Yah. I guess so. LOL. I have accomplished what I need with my character now using a full body morph. Yes, Jagger, I realise the full body morph isn't a true morph but a morph controlling morph. It makes calls to morph geometry that are already present in the CR2. Alas, but it doesn't change the settings of the parameter dials for each individual morph when you use the full body morph dial, leaving these dials free for individual tweaking and also saving the entire character in one dial. The not needed or problem causing, Vicky morphs, I just deleted in the CR2. With my other Morphs I just dialed them in to create my character, spawned a full body Morph of my char and then set all parameter dials back to zero. Then I just dialed the new Parameter dial (full body morph) to 1.000 and Wahlah. This at least solves my problem. Now I have my full char in one dial and users can tweak invdividual morph settings without screwing up the character herself. I just resave the CR2 and I'm done :). Thanks you guys. ----Keihan

Hmmm...still nothing. This is quite perplexing. I have done this before without any problems. The base model I'm using is Mellenium Woman Victoria, but I doubt that is the problem even though Poser gives me an err when loading her the first time (Version number different than expected blah blah. You guys know the one). Anyhow, I think I'm just going to spawn a full body morph of my char. Extract that morph and apply it to Vicky and set it to 1.000. That should at least create my char, intact, with the proper settings and morphs all in one dial, until I can figure this issue out. Thanks for the help though. If you do happen to figure out what I may be doing wrong here, I'd still like the input. :) Thanks, ----Keihan

Err... Just tried that and keeps showing up still. I had thought that too last night and tried it then, but figured I'd try it again just in case I did something else wrong. Hmmm...I must be doing something wrong. Perhaps in loading or saving not sure which. But for some reason it keeps showing the dials. ---Keihan
Thread: Why doesn't Vickie match her obj file? | Forum: Poser Technical
Hmmm... Illegitimate Children. Yes I agree that sounds correct. I saw another article about circumventing that particular rule by Bloodsong I think. There are probably a multitude of tricks to get around the prob. But some of them will most likely cause different limitations. Arrrghh. If I figure something out I'll certainly post it here. If nobody else has figured it out completely, not sure how lil ole me is goin to, but I'm the master of manipulation...heheh. Thanks Jim
Thread: Why doesn't Vickie match her obj file? | Forum: Poser Technical
Yes, I contacted Anton about this and he too said it is a prob with the Vicki OBJ file and prob within poser itself. He states that poser has for a long time has had problems with skirts. I'll have to tinker with some theories to see if there is an easy way to circumvent this problem. Probably not, but it's worth a shot. To keep her belly or other hidden body parts from protruding through we can just make those body parts transparent, as for the thigh...LOL that is the issue I'll try to work on. I may end up modelling my custom characters from scratch if the Vicky problem can't be resolved. I'd hate to do that because of the work involved, so I'll see if I can resolve this problem first. I do some character animation and can't have this problem in my poser chars.
