"And I agree with everyone who feels that we don't have to denigrate one product just to make another look better. I'm sure that D/S will have many desirable features, which is why I look forward to trying it." I agree 100%. "kuroyume0161 you really should study-up on more recent developments in rendering which make dihedral polygon smoothing unnecessary or at least redundant when other methods yield equivalent and possibly superior results." Like anything, there's good and bad aspects to everything. While it might be possible to use micropolygon displacement smoothing to allow lower-poly models to render as well as high poly counts (in both the base mesh and any morph meshes) it also limits what you can actually do regarding rendering engines. Build a very low-poly model that renders well with Firefly, for example, and you're stuck using Firefly to render (no using the P4 engine, or exporting to another program that doesn't have micropolygon displacement smoothing). Build a high-poly model, and you can move it anywhere (or at least almost anywhere). With hardware getting faster and cheaper, the need for super-low poly models isn't as great as it used to be. That's not to say there's not a lot of advantage to being able to use low-poly models either. Depending on them, though, does lower your options come render time. "I'm also leary of OpenGL - its great for fast previews and real-time activities, but the price of that speed often means living with some annoying artifacts." You lost me on this one. None of the 3D programs I own that use OpenGL use it for final renders, only for previews. I'm sure there'll be some problems with somebody's cards or drivers (there always is, regardless of who's making what software) but hopefully they won't be too disasterous. OpenGL previews is one of the things I'm most looking forward to. I figure just being able to actually see where the hair sits, or how and where the clothing falls will save hours a week in set-up time and make a lot of my preview renders unnecessary. Another aspect I'm excited about with DAZ's choice of rendering engine is the possibility of network rendering (using BORG), not only on an animation but the chance of using multiple machines on my home network to render a single large pict (last time I could do that cheaply was with Infini-D). If it works, that could be another huge timesaver. I'm also hoping we'll see batch processing eventually as well, but haven't seen any hint of it yet. I'm certainly not expecting perfection first time out of the gate, but I'm not expecting a total disaster either. I've used Poser since beta testing for version 1.0, and I don't see wiping it from my drive in the next few months. I am excited, though, of the new possibilities on our doorstep. I expect to use both programs for the forseeable future. -- Walt Sterdan, Freelance

"And, since few people around here know the difference anyway, I guess most would be perfectly happy to let DAZ continue to lead them around by the nose like they always have." I know I am! ;-) If being handed a free piece of software that uses an industry-standard-compliant rendering engine to test to see if I like it is leading me around by the nose, then let 'em lead away! Of course, there's always the alternative, CL, who made me wait for almost a year after the Windows version was released before releasing the Mac version, the same people who charged me more for the downloadable versions of P4 & PP than for the shipping boxed version, who keep me waiting for weeks for tech solutions that they can't solve (but are solved here). If my only two choices are being led around by the nose by DAZ with free software or being treated like a second-class citizen by CL, then yeah, I'm happy with DAZ. ;-)
Thread: Daz Studio Beta due November! | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
"I suspect the public beta will be longer than a month before release but then again maybe they are further along than I thought." Well, technically, I guess they could release the beta in very early November and release the final right at the end of December, making it more like a two-month beta. ;-) I agree that it's pretty exciting (transparency in preview mode alone will make my life better); judging by the number of people who are quick to find the flaws in new meshes (or Poser upgrades) and the speed at which they do it, and adding to them the number of extra people who'll join in more quickly because the program is free rather than holding off until they can afford it and I think it's safe to say to say that the bug-finding part of the beta should go fairly quickly; it' up to DAZ, of course, to fix 'em quickly enough to make the final version release date. I'm anticipating a fairly smooth procedure (I'm feeling optimistic today) with a fairly stable program late December/early January. After that, we're back to waiting patiently, this time for the plug-ins.

You can take a peek at DAZ's Anime Dolls for V3: http://secure.daz3d.com/shop.php?op=itemdetails&item=1246 Unfortunately it requires Victoria 3.0 Base, Victoria 3.0 Head Morph Pak and Victoria 3.0 Male Morph Pak, but it does give some anime that doesn't look too bad in 3D renders.

"I wanted to do a M3/V3 version, and sell it as a cheap base texture set, like the original." Cheap-ish combo M3/V3 packs would be great, but you're probably talking about two distinct packs, right? :-( I've picked up a couple of your packages so far and will get more in the future, for sure. I like the idea of some matching futuristic civies, as not everyone'll be in the services. The boots look great, by the way; nice, normal boots that don't draw too much attention are a worthwhile addition all by themselves. Looking forward to seeing the other props.
Thread: Whats wrong with M3 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
"OK, considering all that has been said about V2 and M3 and who was made from what and meshes aren't the same, I decided to load the obj file for V3 and the obj file for M3." From everything's that been said so far: 1. DAZ created a unimesh; not yet Victoria, not yet Micheal (let's call the unimesh something androgynous, like "Pat"), but parent to them both. DAZ was even nice enough to post a sample of the mesh. 2. From the unimesh, they molded Victoria 3. 3. From the unimesh, they then molded Micheal 3. 4. It has been mentioned that the meshes for V3 and M3 are very similar, making texture maps easier to translate between the two. 5. Despite the numerous, simple explanations, some people seem unable to understand that, because they both started from Pat, they will be very similar, and instead fantasize that V3 was molded into M3. Is that what you were trying to clarify with the mesh posts? If so, you're right, both figures, molded from Pat, have very close meshes, as has been explained numerous times.

"1. We hope to have it up the middle of this week at DAZ." Great news! I'll jot myself a memo to buy it and M3 this week. "2. Have not thought about a Aiko/Maiko set. So many figure so little time :) " Understood; there's been so little made especially for the figures, it always seems like a shame (especially for the male figure). They seem like naturals for the manga textures though... ;-) The previews look even better than my V3 version (love the helmet). You've sold another one! Thanks.

"Thanks, we're still doing some little tweeks for fit and morphs." 1. How long do I have to wait? I've got the Vicky set but need the Mike set to do proper teams. I've held off purchasing Mike until you guys were ready. ;-) 2. Any chance of ever seeing an Aiko/Maiko set?

"Morph Master is so simple to use most people wouldn't have a problem utilising them :) " Thems with PCs, at any rate. ;-)
Thread: Question about the market for DAZ studio ( Not a Joke) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I don't know of anything online with the exception of the still and animation samples on the Greenbriar site. I don't have Animation Loader yet (working with mainly stills at the moment) but the Lightwave versions of CR2 Loader and CR2 Rigger have worked flawlessly for me (so far... knock wood). Any CR2 I've loaded has come in as advertised, with endomorphs intact. If there's anything specific you'd like me to test, let me know privately and, time permitting, I'll give it a try. You might contact the author as well with any specific questions, especially regarding the C4D versions; he's been very responsive (two free updates since my initial purchase) and I'm a satsified customer. -- Walt Sterdan, Freelance
Thread: Question about the market for DAZ studio ( Not a Joke) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
"As a person who already renders poser figures in a high-end open GL, batch processing true radiosity capable programthat opens Pz3 directly,it occurs to me that I have NO need for Daz studio." "...I animate in poser and import the animated figure Via the propack plugin, a thorough previsualization in poser prevents me from having to make changes after the PZ3 is imported into C4DXL." So if DAZ Studio allowed you to do the same thing that Poser does for you now but was faster (perhaps because of OpenGL previews) and possibly worked better, you wouldn't have any use for it? I'm afraid I don't quite understand. If you were able to pick up a program and just the plug-ins you actually need to do what you do now but be able to do it faster, cheaper and better, why wouldn't you want it? Surely the desire to save time and money isn't just a low-end objective? ;-) At the very, very least, I find the idea of being able to see how transmapped hair is going to look without having to render it would be an incredible time-saver. I will be using it, from the get-go. How long it takes, if ever, to replace Poser in my toolbox, I have no idea, but stating that you "have NO need" for an unreleased product without actually knowing if can help your workflow seems, at the very least, incredibly short-sighted. To answer your actual question ("how many users here already have viable alternative render solutions") I use Lightwave with the Greenbriar plug-ins; I'm looking forward to DAZ Studio helping me work faster and, hopefully, with fewer bugs than with Poser 5 for MacOSX. I'm also looking forward to DAZ Studio releases and updates for the Mac showing up in the same year as the Wintel versions. ;-) -- Walt Sterdan, Freelance
Thread: Poser 5 crashes a lot | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
"The cloth room crashes every time I try to do anything in it. And the Pose room crashes whenever you do a copy/paste in the animation window. Sometimes the Pose room crashes when just trying to reposition a camera." If it helps, I tested out the copy/paste in the animation window and, yup, it crashed (first crash for me... so far). I spent about 20 minutes in the cloth room monkey-clicking every button and dial without crashing, even returning to the Pose room with an incredibly unrealistic, monkey-clicked cloth that threatened to mutilate poor Don's torso every time he moved. ;-) I've been repositioning cameras for days without a crash there either. -- Walt Sterdan, Freelance

Haven't tried those specific actions, but I've been playing with it since it was released and I haven't crashed once (800 MHz G4 iMac, OSX 10.2.6, 1 GB RAM). Multiple figures (No crosstalk! Yes!), vehicles, textures, no problems so far. A problem I am having and have reported (no response yet) is that I'm unable to load morph targets (I tested Anton's Promo Girl and Xena's Aiko clothing morphs). I go through the motions, select the morph target, and it does... nothing. No dial additions, no warning boxes, nothing. I even tried to load an incorrect morph OBJ (different vertices count, different object, etc.) and still no warnings or changes. Anybody else having this problem? -- Walt Sterdan, Freelance
