Quote - I know these questions aren't directed to me, mate, but they make me think, and I just have to ask... How would anyone ever know if you would be able to create the same image quality in Blender? Assuming you will have the same exact model as shown in the renders, and the same exact textures, then all that's missing is your own skill and knowledge of the renderer you're using, mate.
I haven't touched Blender in some time. I just don't get along with that software, and it being free doesn't change that fact. That said, I know Blender has a render engine that can render just as good as anything Lux has shown us here. There's nothing going on in these renders that is out of the realm of capability of any good, modern render engine. The missing element, in the end, is if you have the skill to pull it off. That's something only YOU can answer, mate.
So can ya render that same object just as good as Lux? Only you know. If you can, well, good on ya!
You're right. The questions weren't directed to you, so why did you feel obligated to answer them?
Just for your information, there's a big difference between skill and knowledge. I know that the results of a render depend on how much I know about the renderer and materials, but my point was actually if there is anything "universal" I could do, once I have this object, to get the same kind of results. His renders look like photographs. I've seen this kind of quality done with Cycles. That's really why I asked what render engine he was using, so that I could understand if it's something I could do in Blender to get the same result out of it, like adding HDRI images or whatever to the scene. What does my skill level have to do with that? I didn't know it takes "skill" to set up HDRI images in Cycles. Knowing that's what he used will help steer me in the right direction.

Holy wow!! :tt1:
First, I would like to say, great model! The way you create your models always seems to produce a great looking wireframe. You're an artisan modeler, my friend. I can actually follow your tutorials in Blender, and that's awesome.
Second, the renders you posted above are out of this world!! Sooooo realistic looking. What render engine do you use in your software? I probably can't afford it, but just curious anyway.
Third, I'm using Blender and Cycles to create images, as you may recall from the other thread. In your experience, do you think I'd be able to take your model and create an image of the same quality?
Looking forward to this model. Thanks ahead of time. :thumbupboth:

Quote - That's no mean feat, HMorton! Well done. Following a tutorial meant for another modelling program is not an easy thing to do, particularly for a paint-by-the-number modeller like me who needs quite a bit of hand-holding until that "AhA!" moment hits. Definitely an accomplishments on a number of levels... good ON ya, mate!
THANK YOU! I really appreciate that. It was a little bit of a challenge at first, I won't lie. The guy was doing some stuff I didn't think I could duplicate in Blender off the bat, but I was wrong! I ended up learning some tricks I didn't know before. This is a great community. I love visiting the modeling forums here. Some great stuff, and no "attitude" you get in some other forums I've been. It's very refreshing to see people using the expensive modeling software, who aren't snobby about helping Blender users.

I used to watch Blender tutorials, and think to myself I can never learn it, because I have a hard time memorizing hotkeys. But once you force yourself to use them for a couple models, it's amazing how much faster you can work, and how easy Blender soon becomes to use.
Same with Photoshop. I've seen tutorials by Photoshop pros where they work SO fast, I wasn't aware Photoshop could be used to do things so quickly. It's almost like if you are going to follow tutorials, you must know the hotkeys, or you won't be able to keep up.
Are there any graphics or 3D softwares out there which don't make use of hotkeys? I'm sure I'd want to keep far away from those, if there are any that exist. I can't imagine having to constantly use a UI for things like navigating around a scene, or executing commands.

I have an idea of how to make the handle, but I'm waiting for the top. Another great tutorial which is easy to follow in Blender too. Thanks!

That would be so cool! Yes, hotkeys are the single most important thing to learn for using any software, but especially Blender. Great resource.

Thank you, Lobo3433! I'm really proud of it. It's the first time I've successfully followed a tutorial that wasn't specifically meant for Blender. It's also my first image to this website.
I learned some really great things doing this scene too. Obviously, I learned how to make that unique window by changing the surface edges with subdivision modifier, which I probably would have never figured out on my own, even though it was really simple. I also learned about the awesome EWOCproject plugins, which came in extremely handy for a bunch of things! Thanks to Hedheld and Cybermonk for that too. Great couple of guys, and great forum!

Wanted to share my render with you, and thank you for a really great tutorial. I would have never figured out how to get a cool window shape like this on my own! Thanks again! HOLD THE PHONE! I just found the solution for doing that same edge connection cut with and automatic quad production! I was not using the Subdivide tool in Blender correctly!
The key to making the same edge connections in Blender as you see being done at this point in the tutorial video by Luxxeon here:
http://youtu.be/ErtmvdOLFZg?t=5m4s
The way to do it is to select all the same edges, then use Subdivide to make the edge connection. However, you must remember to enable the Quad/Tri Mode ticker box in the subdivide option menu in order to get the same results! You could change the type of quad it produces too. If you want one much like the video, you should use Inner Vert option as the Quad Corner Type!
If you don't use the Quad/Tri ticker, then the cut isn't the same, and you need to use the knife tool to finish it off.
Blender is amazing! Thanks again for the tutorial.

UPDATE!! I found the solution! I forgot to enable the Quad/Tri mode in the Subdivide options. Wow, that was silly of me. If you subdivide without that option ticked, it won't work, but if you tick the Quad/Tri option box in the Subdivide menu while the tool is active, it will make the same kind of edge cut connection. The automatic quad creation isn't quite as perfect as the way it's done with 3dsmax, but it works, and works very well!
Three cheers for BLENDER! What an amazing software.

Hey everyone! I have yet another question about improving my modeling speed. Does anyone know how we can go about setting up edge cut connections like are being done at this point in the linked video:
http://youtu.be/ErtmvdOLFZg?t=5m4s
I know it's not Blender, but I've been following this tutorial as it was posted in the 3d modeling forum. When I reached this point, I wondered if we had a tool that could make edge cuts through unorthodox edge selections like this, in an equally simple way. It seems to be done by selecting edges, then pressing some command to automatically connect them all with a very straight and symmetric way.
I know we have the subdivide, which I use all the time to make nice connections through edge rings, but it doesn't seem to work right for dong this kind of cut. Instead, the only solution I can think of is the K key, then hold down alt to get the edges straight, but sometimes that doesn't seem to work perfectly, and I have to adjust things by hand even more. I don't mind using the knife tool mind you. The knife tool in Blender seems to be lightyears better than cutting tools I've seen in any other modeling software. I was just wondering if there was any automatic way to do this which I'm missing in my workflow.
Edited to add the link. Oops. :blushing:
