Poser P4, PP, P5 reads every library folder when launching (in the current runtime only in the case of P5). Every file, every sub-directory. And yes, it does read in alphabetic order. Whenever Poser can't find a texture in the location specified in the items .cr2/.pp2/.pz2/ect file, then it again searches every folder in alpha order in Runtime. And yes, I did mean to say "every". It searches .dll's, the entire Python folder, etc, so it'll be reading for quite a while before it even gets to the Textures folder! This is why using CRPro to correct texture - and other - links can make such a huge improvement to Poser operation. Oh, and BTW Poser doesn't close any of the folders it opens to search for textures!!! Except for the final one iff it finds the texture somewhere. In Win9x this sloppiness is ignored by the OS, but the Win2k/XP Windows records and holds open - ie. locked - each of those folders until Poser.exe is closed. (I understand why this bug wasn't addressed in Poser 4 and PP, but P5 and certainly the P5SR's were released well after Win2K became prevalent.) I certainly agree with Veritas777's method of 1 geometry folder and separate libraries for the reasons that he gives, and PBooost let's you do this easily. Check out PoserPros P5 Tips and Tricks forum for a compendium of ways to speed up Poser. Some apply to P4 and PP too.
Thread: SR3 Versus SR 4.1 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I think you'll find that SR4 - as in SR4.0 - was the one with the negative feedback. For me SR4 was slower than any other P5 release. SR4.1 however works, and is as fast or faster - in terms of responsiveness (with Content Parasite removed of course) than any prior version of P5. I'm still no P5 fan or user, prefering PPP for it's responsiveness, but I'd still choose SR4.1 than any other P5 edition - and I've tried them all. Only way I can see they could speed up the response time of SR4.1 (to P4 equivalent) would be to put the Paramter Dial back on the main Poser UI panel where it belongs, avoiding the Windows inter-task communication overhead, but I doubt that'll ever happen. (Dunno what was up with SR4, felt like there was something wrong with its build, like a bit of diagnostic code still compiled in or something.)

Mayhem, It's an easy edit to the xml file. Any text editor will do - e.g. NotePad. Change it to 1000 by adding a 0 should do it, you'll never have that many. Dumb idea for CL to add this restriction. The background is reputedly that some were complaining that the libraries took to long to open, so CL's response was to articifical stop Poser displaying more than 100 items per library. The real fix SWAMP posted yesterday to this forum. But the 100 limit may not be the issue here, as you'd be missing items all togetehr, not just images.

P3do is free, so just give it a try. A very valuable utility for many other reasons. No thumbnail at all??? Then render an image that takes your fancy at 91 x 91 pixels, save as .png, named to match the .cr2, .pz2, etc. file. No need to use P3do in this case, as P5 accpets .png's.

Shrugging guy means no .rsr file which is used by P4, and which gets converted automatically to .png by ProPack and P5. You may have a .png files which is of no use to P4. Grey circle in ProPack or P5 means that the .png file is not in the right format. PP/P5 require a .png with an alpha channel to define the area to be displayed, and .png files do not have to have an alpha channel. The easiest way to deal with either is to download P3do from the link given above. Including the Convert Rsr2Png plugin. For shrugging guy in P4 run the Rsr2Png converter to convert .png to .rsr on the individual folder in question (it'll do the whole folder in one pass). For grey circle in PP or P5: - if you have an .rsr then delete (or rename) the .png and then run the convert .rsr to .png step as above. - if you don't have a .rsr, then first run Convert Rsr2Png to convert the .png to a .rsr, then do the delete .png run convert .rsr to png step.Thread: html not allowed in comment field now??????????? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
EnglishBob, & l t (without the spaces) and & g t (no spaces) give you < and > symbols. But you have to get it right first time - no previews ;-) Or just attach the post as a text file.

Here's the thread - see link.Warning - have a clear head, plenty of time on hand, and prepare by taking on board a day's supply of caffine before... you even try to open this thread. Let alone comprehend it!!!
But you did ask: "Is there a better way to model the chains to do that, in pieces,..." ;-) You can't do better than instruction at the feet of the Poser (math) god VK.

And see my tip in PoserPros' P5 Tips and Tricks forum (it's near the top) to reduce the height of each Paramter Dial entry by 50%. Get more per panle, and reduce the amount of scrolling.
Thread: Want Your Library To Open/Display Instantaneously?... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Wow! Cool tip. Probably will not find this file on a Mac - it wouldn't be needed as the MacOS can handle pict and gif file types natively. Suspect MetaCreations just included this in the Windows version as the lazy way out (rather than implementing pict & gif support in the Poser code).
Thread: Does anyone know where I can buy a heavy set lady for Poser program? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
bnetta, PhilC's clothes for V3 come with many of V3's morphs built in. If Lunarseas could be persuaded to share the V3 settings used... Just need to open the character and copy the settings to the clipboard, and paste into a message here. Will look messy, but anyone can copy and paste back onto their fully morphed V3. (Or post them in the Poser Character Formulas Gallery that was set up for this purpose. No need to edit out the extra fields.) TIA.

Re removing CP: Info exists here, but it's easiest to find at PoserPros, under Jaager's Poser 5 Tips & Tricks forum, 'cos he keeps it near the top of the forum.

What ockham said - both points ;-) It automates all of the drudgery of keeping the return/back links straight, thus allowing you to setup/re-arrange any menu order, any number of levels of menu, and even supports adding your own comments (ScriptNotes) without going near an editor. And if you want to edit a script it's only a click away using Notepad or the editor of your choice. You can even open Poser Library while you have Poser running if you want to read/check/amend your ScriptNotes. And Help is almost a manual as is usual with Hogwarden's tools.Thread: Removing the face room? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Removing Content Parasite helps Poser load time because a) it saves loading lots of Microsoft's large Internet Explorer code to do the internet functions, and b) Poser and said IE code aren't wasting any cycles communciating with each other (inter process) and/or banging on your firewall.
Any other room would at most only make a savings in the initial load time, and as it's likely small (relative to IE) and a contiguous interwoven part of the Poser application code, the load time savings are going to be small - if realised at all.
So I think we're out of luck - or conversely, very lucky that axing CP was soooo easy ;-)

Re #5, no need to take down entire firewall, just deactivate the referrer filter before you click on the Mirror 1 link. Thanks for the great freebie.

gVim, esp. if you add Dodger's Poser Syntax checker. It's essentially Unix Vi but with a GUI so you don't have to learn every arcane command to use as a normal editor. But the full power of Vi is there - including scripting - whenever you need it. And FAST! It loads multi-MB files instantly.
And Dodger's Poser syntax script poser.vim) displays all Poser syntax color coded. And a similar feature for Python is built in.
Price is right too - $0.00.
