Could be one of those registry keys or dll thingy's is corrupt. But usually the error will tell you that when it happens. Dunno... Did you try removing and reinstalling yet?

Well, with the right lens filter and a long exposure...;)
There's always a way if you think of it...

Thread: A thought to ponder . . . . . | Forum: Bryce
I think of computers as another medium to work in... Actually it's not really the computer, but the programs. Since I like 2D and 3D and the nature of each is different, yet complimentary. It's kinda like having a picture of a sculpture you made and then being able to repaint it... Heh... Regardless of playing with the virtual mediums, sometimes it's also nice to get a pen and a piece of paper and do things the ol' fashioned way. Besides, if all else fails... As for my computer history... It dates back to the TI-89A computer with cartridge when I was a little kid, then to the days of a real 8-bit with the Atari 130XE (which I fondly remember), 16-bit with the Commodore Amiga 500, and finally to the current class of computers with my Presario 1690 (or whatever computer that other people will let me play with.) Also I'd like to mention that computers were used in animated films earlier than some may think. If my memory serves right, "The Black Cauldron" was actually done using computers for reference in the animation work. It's a couple years older than "Beauty and the Beast", and it even had a game based on it. Speaking of changes... I'm waiting for that next big one... It might be funny to hear people say, "remember when we had to drive somewhere, before teleportation." Heh...

Looking at the curved portions you can see slight evidence of faceting. Thus odds are that these weren't done with booleans, as booleans render smooth and don't show faceting. It may have been rendered in Bryce, but used imported objects. There are some freeware programs which are great at modeling wireframes. By using them to save in a format that you can import into Bryce, they make Bryce much more versatile. I think that's the best way to workaround some things when modeling.

Sounds cool... No more dead links! This is great! And a plan to institute some degree of quality control (which makes me wonder what the subjective criteria are.) I suppose it would involve making sure techniques are of use and explained in a way easily duplicated by others.

Take a digital photo of a random room in the house and try to get the lighting/perspective right for use as the background. Blur or soften the digital photo a bit. Make a mask render. Use your favorite 2D graphics program and overlay this image on top the blurred photo using the masking. Make sure to postwork the translucent parts appropriately, since Bryce doesn't handle them too well when it generates masks (either all or nothing it seems.) I think it's a fairly simple idea for a background and it should work somewhat decent.

Hmmm... I know that when I did something like this, it seemed best if all the objects in the window group are actually positive. Then the window group as a whole is set to negative. Then grouped again with a positive wall. It's funny what you can do with successive layers of grouping too. Boolean grouping heiarchy has to be thought out. Not to mention that sometimes if something doesn't work, you have to look for that layer of grouping that wasn't set positive etc. Also note the solid thing on the mesh smoothing (the little edit box on imported meshes.) If you're boolean operation involves imported meshes you'll either end up with a hollow mesh or a cookie cutter (as in your case) if it's not set to solid.

Thread: Bryce's future? | Forum: Bryce
I know what would be nice... Make the interface run in a regular window. Have the interface automatically scale its resolution/size to be useful regardless of screen resolution settings. Also the interface size should be independent of the project size. I dunno about B5, but in B4 - it's annoying to have to change the document size back and forth for layout and rendering just so you can see and use the controls while making full screen images (XGA res.) It can't be that difficult can it? Other software does stuff like this all the time. If Corel doesn't want to back up Bryce anymore, perhaps they should offer it to JASC. That company is pretty dang good at what they do, and this would allow that company to get their foot in the door regarding 3D. Not to mention that their pricing has been fair to the consumer. Heh... Well, that's how I look at it.

Dunno why, but I think of SimCity before the town exists... Now where should I put that powerplant? And the roads? Actually, something like this would be a good starting point for an arial picture of a town.

I dunno why, but if I worked for Corel and saw this... I'd offer to buy it and use it as a magazine advertisement... Kinda the way some games are advertised with self inflicted humor. Besides, it's all too true... Must go Bryce... The urge compels me...

Well, provided that the ships are imported mesh objects... You could put stickers on them using a program called UVmapper. I'm sure someone here could explain the process. I've seen some cool results if it's done right. I wonder what kind of futuristic companies would sponsor the fliers... Interplanetary Mining? ChemaCorp? Reston Genetics? Well, you'll come up with something.

Yeah... I bet you miss the experience of being there - not! Just when the end of the drive is shoveled, a flickering amber glow is cast from around the corner. And soon afterward appears the dreaded orange truck. Well, I guess only fellow northerners can relate to that... ;) I wonder if anyone has rendered that situation...

Dunno about the elevation of the sattelite dish, since most broadcast sattelites are equatorial (having that geostationary orbit yada yada...) Never been up that far north, so I'm not sure. Yet, it still seems tilted a bit low. But where is the juice coming from? It wouldn't hurt to have a generator and some gas cans sitting around? Or perhaps some kind of power rig built into the snowmobile itself - and thus some wires... I doubt the generator would be kept in the igloo itself - the heat would be nice, but the noise and exaust would still exclude it to the outside. I know - it must be that it's right behind the igloo. ;)

Thread: Dark Industrial | Forum: Bryce
I liked how the lighting looked in your first version. However, the light sources themselves weren't visible. Usually one sees the glare of the lights themselves, with the structural skeleton ghosting through (Well, that's how I describe it.) Pretty good effect overall of getting it to look like something lit with sodium vapor lamps. Now you need some variety of terrain around it, cyclone fences, and trees in the distance. Since the trees will be in the dark - it will probably work best to use 2D trees (silhoettes should work ok even.) Then add that patchy fog that's usually visible in the wee hours of the morning for atmosphere. It's funny but as far as I know, most people regard industrial structures as ugly. But I guess I'm not the only one who thinks function biased forms actually look cool (why else would people model them?) I'm considering modeling a powerplant at night with steam and all, but I think it'll be rendering hell on my laptop (400Mhz AMD K6II) to get the atmospherics and lighting right.
