Thread: Pentium 4 or Athlon which one is better? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Cinnamon, if you haven't obtained it yet, you might want to consider Windows 2000. It won't have all the eyecandy and 'special features' that XP has, but under the hood they are essentially the same. And Win2k doesn't require activation, just the good ol serial number. And dual booting is much nicer with Win2k, if you want to retain the 9x compatibility. As for the CPU wars, the last Intel chip I owned was a 386SX-40. It was also the first and last computer I bought assembled. Been building them ever since, and been AMD all the way. Well, for instance; one render I did had 4 Poser characters (Mike, Vicki, PS kid, and PT kid), three sets of Travellers faun legs and horns, two of Steffy ZZ's system killer textures, and slightly more benign hi res for the others, imported into Vue 4 into a scene with 2 of the flowering cherry trees, multiple hills, a couple of fill lights...all told over 255 items, and in excess of 4,000,000 polygons. My XP-1700 handled the load just fine. Had to boost my swap file up to a gig, but... ;) AMD has the best cost/performance ratio, and as others have said, you can take the money you save on that and put it elsewhere, like more ram, or multiple hard drives. Don't worry about things like '3D-Now' or MMX or SSE-2; they are essentially the same thing, unique instructions that have been added to the standard X-86 code base, and registers added to the actual CPU, that permit certain graphics and audio processing calls to bypass the longer pipelines in processing and speed up response time. Their usage spotty at best, and they are still more marketing tools than anything else. They work, but they aren't considered something neccesary.

I'll add my thanks for the reassurance of the security status, as well. I'd already hit the button before I noticed my browser didn't claim secure setup... :P

Defintely the articulated hands and feet, as well as the variable digit numbers on both sets of extremities, and the eye shape varations. All the other stuff sounds excellent, as well. And if it is feasible, maybe a doc or pdf for the 3rd party people, to give them the info they need to adjust their products to be useable with all the new goodness.

On your next obj export, check the box for export with include body part names. That should give you a list like Eye 1-1, 1-2, and so on. =Much= easier to find things that way. And I would love to know if anyone has a workaround for Cake 1's Real eyes, as well. Haven't had much luck on my own...

98-SE doesn't have as robust a memory management system as any of the NT kernel OS's do. And personally, I would recommend Win2k Pro. You can get it legally at a computer show for around $149, or less. You only have to futz with the standard registration number, not the activation nonsense. And with a little work you can hang almost all of the eye candy available for previous Windows off of it(Plus packs, etc). Manually, at least, as Win2k never had an eyecandy pack, and XP's won't work with it (or at least won't admit it will work with it....). If you have the hard drive space, you can set up a dual boot, and retain the 98-SE for DOS and legacy apps, and run the good stuff on 2k. Best of both worlds, and you don't have to cowtow to Uncle Bill's whims... Oh, and the 'firewall' that ships with XP is more like half a firewall. It keeps out most things, but it -is- transparent to MS approved activities. Or so a techie friend has told me. I won't touch XP in any way, shape, or form until Shane Brooks gets his 2kXP Lite program out to the masses, so I can get rid of all the deadweight under the hood... >:)

The latest version of Pboost is supposed to have dealt with the problems of file protection on Win2k, and Win2k and FAT 32 for us dual booters (I can only say 'supposed' because I haven't installed the latest version and played with it). Probably going to wait until I get P5 and see how well the new nesting works, but considering all the fricking content I have, I suspect that Pboost will find a new home...at least once Hogwarden has verified it works with the new Poser.

Oh yes, definitely 2kPro. All the goodness, none of the dreck, and no stupid activation to contend with. And lots of drivers, for the most part....

Ahhhh, the good ol' Altair 8008... What a toy that was. Remember when the first 8080 boards came out for those things? and the 16k dynamic RAM boards that only cost about $1500. Oh, and then there was the day they came out with an actual 256 baud accoustic modem set up -internal- to the computer...except for the coupler, natch... And the first 24x80 video card with a whole 2k of actual static RAM. Those were the days..... Ghod, I wish I could find one of those again, just to sit on a desk and admire....

Heh heh hehhh... Lay's potato chips has nothing on Poser, that's for sure! And just think about all the =new= goodies coming out...like the shader node settings and the hair constructs and the polycaps over various body parts to add hair other places than on the head and... ...and that doesn't even include the stuff that will be done to retrofit existing content to use P5's new goodies.. :)
Thread: P5 and Vue for Mac? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well, we know that P5 has both the new Firefly renderer, and the older P4 renderer. At the very least, anything that the older mode can do should be importable. I don't think anyone has said whether PZ3 remains the file format for Firefly, or if it has a new format.

Looks like a definite upgrade for me! ...and more memory. ...lots more CD's for new content. ...maybe a faster Athlon. And lots of time to play! Thanks for the look ahead, Anthony!
