i shoot in raw and correct white balance (if necessary) later... usually i shot in "auto"...
except for the infrared shoot that i use custom white balance

i agree with you about the very fast focussing...
about the eyes ... for me is a challenge too... i dress glasses since one month ... hard to be sure that the focus is correct :( for me is a tragedy :((((

i don' t use automatic options of my camera (includin' autofocus) since so many time...
probably the manual focus is the best way to capture macro shots!
hard to believe but the eyes are the better "autofocus" :)

i think that this link contains incredible macro shots... nothing near mine as magnification and sharpness...
maybe it was used Canon MPE-65mm...
