No matter what, I prefer 5 over 4. My only problem is a slowdown in the work areas when you get a load of objects in, such as would happen using version 4 on a much slower machine. I use a 1 gig machine with 512 megs, so 4 flew along in the building stage with that. 5 slows down there, but I still get good render times and find the output a bit sharper and richer. Not sure if that's a real observation of imaginary, but it does seem that my textues appear richer. I love the trees, just burying the root mass so only a peek shows here and there. I also shave off some trunk swellings in post, but love those trees and the variations. Anyway, that's a few pennies worth of trivia. Walt "Mike"
Thread: Boolean Q | Forum: Bryce
I use the boolean features a lot. A good lighthouse can be made by taking a cone and stretching it, getting the lower, fatter part to look like what you might like (without thinking about the light part yet). Then, make it positive and make a negative square to cut off the upper portion, with the point. This will give you a slightly tapered cylinder, which you can adjust in any way you want. Then, after you are satisfied with that, go about building the part that holds the light. Before linking the negative square and positive cone, you might want to push a negative square in for a doorway, or indentation for a nice door, then link the mess together and see what you got. I hope this helped some. Walt "Mike"
Thread: Bryce 5 is actually faster then Bryce 4 | Forum: Bryce
My rendering times are very good with Bryce 5, so I don't complain there at all. I have a 1 gig machine pushing 512 megs. Where I notice a difference is when loading in many-faceted objects during the working stage. If, say, I have a some trees, two terrains and a character involved, adding a patch of certain grasses might require a bit of a wait. I have waited a good minute or so for the object to eventually load in. Like 4 on a slower system, 5 seems to allow for a lot of objects, but will drag when you get past a certain amount. 4 stopped that when I got the gig and 512, while 5 goes back to it. All in all, I prefer 5 in its richness, which I seem to notice enhanced some in my texturing. Maybe that's an illusion, but it does seem to be true. I really like the trees, too. I might do postwork some (shaving off a swelling or two) but love the variations available.
Thread: HELP!!! | Forum: Bryce
Just adding my 2 cents, I would repeat what cowtoast said. In all of my many posted images, where I use the basic terrain models that run flat to the surrounding area, I always lift the red in the terrain editor, most often having set the resolution to something over 512 in that little grid area. This is also necessary if you use the terrains for making objects you can use. Just draw out your shape, raise the "red" and you'll have the object without the square base around it. Walt "Mike"
Thread: Workaround for crashing while loading a large scene in B4... | Forum: Bryce
When I worked with 4, I had a problem reloading previous work if large. My solution, which always worked for me, was to hit "reset to defaults" in the Edit menu before loading in the work. I stumbled upon that as a solution and the scenes loaded in fine. Walt "Mike"
