Some high-end programs make use of real-time rendering functions of the newer graphics cards (I believe Max, Maya, LightWave, Marionette, Massive, etc. are in this category, but am not 100% sure). Unless you are running one of these high-end, real-time 3D programs, upgrading your card isn't going to do much for your art (and it definitely won't help your renderings at all). Go for the fastest processor you can afford and some more memory (although I think 500+ MB is fine) if you still have money left over.

Clint, I have a really nice link for you.
It's called the 2D/3D Rosetta Stone.
Perhaps they will allow you to use some of their list?

Thread: Gallery browsing by order of post... | Forum: Community Center
No, I don't mean to use the images on my site; just for my own personal browsing. I'd like to go through the whole gallery from start to finish once, and I have such a slow connection that it is a real pain to reload all the superflous page grahpics over and over each time i want to view a gallery page.

Ooooh...ok, I thought you meant a separate list or link just for the admins and mods. Colour me stupid too.

Two solutions. First, try either upping the whales' diffuse and ambient channels (first, set the ambient to use same tex as the diffues, if there is any). Second, you could add a few diffuse lights preferably w/ squared or ranged falloff to the scene by the whales. Either should do fine, but will give you different results. P.S. If you're in Bryce4...you can alt+click-and-drag (pretty sure that's right) in the light preview window to set the radius for the ranged falloff light.Thread: My Contest Entry: "SGI vs. AMD...The Battle Within" | Forum: Bryce

actually, there is supposed to be no ambient light in the scene...it's all supposed to be the sabers, but that didn't totally happen because of the way i had to do the blades.Thread: May's Bryce Forum Challenge Theme Announcement!!!!!!!! | Forum: Bryce

This is the best idea i have heard here in a long time. I consistently (attempt to) use my gallery posts to get feedback about and critiqueing (sp?) of my images...to see wehre i am doing well, and where i need improvement. However, the gallery comments are less than regular in frequancy, and "critique-ness" This idea is wonderful...especially for those of us who are trying to do "experimental techniques" in programs and get feedback about if these new methods of topics are appealing of how they could be improved (you all know who you are).I am wholeheartedly behind the idea of forming this forum, and would actually bewilling to help out in the little way (probably quite little with my excessive commitments in school right now) that I could.
