I wil try some experiment!

I don't know what kind of image are you working on, but usually I use photoshop to compose in layers a complex image, using in Bryce the "mask render" as alpha channal.
Also in the 3D movies (as Pixar movies and so on) they use layers composition during the postproduction in order to speed up the 3D renders. Sometimes in the movies there are more than 10 layers!

I really think that the usual "mania" of 3D artist on Renderosity,  to render all the 3D scene in one shot is really a MANIA... :) more maniacal if is a still image. ;)
The "layer render" give you more control on colors and effects (and many other things) when you postproduce the layers in Photoshop. 

This is what I've done to obtain the "hollow workd effect" from a different POW. The landscape "planes" are huge in dimension. The figure was added later in Photoshop, only for reference. On the final book cover the figures (will be a couple) will be different and more fantasy. The last two upper "planes" are mapped with hi-res satellite images taken from the web. All is covered by an infinite plane mapped with clouds. As you can see, my solution is very similar to the bikermouse suggestion.

BTW: I did not find images of the inside landscape (only outside images) of the Dyson Sphere of the Star Trek episode named Relics.

Yes, but as you can see the "quest for cartoonizing" is not only on outlining in black the figure, but is also to obtain "flat" colors... ;)

Here I am! :) as I've said in the comments of my recent artwork post named "TOON SHADER test", one of my customers ask me for some illustrations with a toon shading. I've make some experiment in Photoshop in order to cartoonizing my artwork. There are many Photoshop action tutorials on the web and I've tried them all, adding also my Photoshop experiece, without obtaining the right result.   After a short search on the net I've find this proggy named "intocartoon" designed for conversion of photos into cartoon-like pictures. Because the prog is thinked only to achive a "cartoon effect" I find it very good, with results and control of the effect much more better than Photoshop and in a shorter time. Anyway it work more or less like a Photoshop plugin and I'm asking why they don't make it as a Photoshop plugin. The only faut of "intocartoon": is a little slow on render and it have also some difficult to manage big files... but it works!

I've also try to process in Photoshop another of my "intocartoon" test images (see the image in attachment) using some cartonizing Photoship action... the final result is interesting!

Anyway, yesterday I've posted a test renderer of the Dork & Posette viper pilots, today I've "employed" them with the good OLD Bryce 4... Not so bad for Dork & Posette & Bryce 4... ;)

I totally agree with you, but I must produce artworks very quicky, and I have too much time to develope my own models.

I'm a pro 3d artist (not because I'm the best here but just because i sell my artworks in the professional market).
I'm not a nostalgic, I know that the time moves on, and I use every kind of software (old or brand new) media to achive my goals... but I hate to go out for shopping using an aircarrier.

Somtime sophisticated Poser models are also unuseful in order to achive the artistic result that I want.
In the case of my Viper pilots, Posette and Dork was perfectly fitted for the roles.
So i still want to use Posette and Dork when they are useful. When they are not I use different  (moderne?) "poser people".
But I don't want to be never be able to use "old people" again just because they, their textures, props, accessories, hairs and so on are disappeared.

Anyway, where is all the old P4 stuff???
Is it pemantely deleted from servers worldwide???

most of those who insists on such apologetics (read as "new is always better") usually have a financial intrest protect and justify.

So at the end of the fair, what about Bryce 6???
