Yikes! Not another piece of software to agonize over. Isn't anything simple anymore? Haven't I lost enough sleep over this already. When I was young, when you wanted to play serious tennis you had one choice for sneakers: Jack Purcells, and one choice for racket: Wilson Jack Kramer. That was it. Now you have to be have a degree in chemical engineering, bio-physics, and graphic design to make an "informed" decision.
Thread: Hair and photorealism? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I am a newbie, but I had the same question. I had seen all these great ads for V3 characters. When I did my first renders, they seemed flat and certainly not photo-realistic. I figured out that I needed to purchase an additional character texture. I decided on Amazing Grace for V3 and purchased on the Renderosity site. But there is DAZ Productions, PoserWorld, PoserStyle, and 3D Commune, to name a few others. Once I worked my way through all the different library selections that you have to make, I was blown away by the rendered result. I was able to duplicate the output from the Amazing Grace ad. As far as the hair goes, I am stil working on that. I bought Hyman Total Hair Complete from Renderosity, but I find that even the best add-on hair textures still need some postwork. And when I posed Vicky, the hair tended to have to be repositioned.

Thanks! That is exactly what I wanted to know. Nice little animation too! BTW, what do the "U" and "V" refer to? While I have your attention, do all those parameters in the materials room work similar to the texture editors in programs like Bryce? For example, if I assume that I can increase the Reflection of an object (in this case, GROUND) by increasing the value of the Reflection Value parameter. Is that true?
Thread: Stewer P5 Renders | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks for the info. I have to admit with all the bad mouthing about Poser 5, now that I am using it, there seem to be alot of accessible tweaking features. Makes the learning curve a little steep though. As a relative newbie to Poser 5, my experience so far was that the Poser 4 (Production) renderer was sufficient for my needs. I did not see any appreciable difference between the FireFly and the P4 for just figures. I have not attempted any complex scenes with props. And P4 was so much faster. What am I missing? I suspect that if I start using complex setups with lots of props and things like reflection and glass that the P4 renders will be much less satisfactory. Is that true?

So I guess the bad news is that is just takes a long time and alot of patience. I am aware of everything that has been suggested so far. It just seems to me that it should be alot easier. Maybe DAZ Studio will be easier to use. Thanks for all your responses. I guess posing in this case is like learning a musical instrument -- practice, practice, practice and tons of patience.

Thread: Poser Pro Pack or Poser 5 upgrade or both? So confused... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well, thanks for all the replies I have received here and in private. You have made my day. My company is paying for the Poser upgrade and it seems that I do not need the Pro package after all (which probably would have come out of my pocket - more money to spend on all the third-party stuff). And the best news is that several people have told me that V3 works fine with Poser 5. I am not happy to hear that Curious Labs has laid of its development staff. But so goes the war. If DAZ does with its own 3D package what it did for Poser with the Victoria and Mike models, then the future may be bright after all. Rich N
