I love images that beg questions. On the marble bases, you might want to go in and click the 'shuffle' option in the shaders to redistribute the marble grains for a little variety. If you want a little more image depth, add a little haze to the scene for a bit of atmospheric perspective. Fun work! Mark
Thread: scaling shaders? | Forum: Carrara
The Corrosion shader (if you're talking about the one that I posted in the free stuff section) uses multiple layers of cellular coloring and bumping. The same cellular pattern and scale is used throughout the shader. To change one means that you should change them ALL if you want the patterns and bumps to match up. To do that, first drop the the shader onto your object. Then go to the texture room and expand the various layers of the corrosion shader. Wherever you find a Cellular shader, adjust its scale accordingly. Hope this helps. Mark

That's a cool direction. And actually, every other month is probably about right for anything that's regular. The historical direction has my wheels turnin' Mark

Cool, thanks for the tip. I'm just one of those types that preferes to have an idea to work on. My suggestion wasn't to start competition but just something to do. I don't spend enough time surfing for 3-d stuff. Mark

I still use RD 5.5 for some of the third party plug-ins that aren't available in C yet and then import to C for final. The render quality is much nicer in Carrara and the lighting issues and shader capabilities are more robust in C. Carrara has a couple of bugs but so does RD. I can't address the bones stuff. Is that tutorial on-line? I've been using the constraints functions for kinematics. Is that how you do it? The Carrara interface is different but similar (more like Poser and Bryce if you have those programs). Had to look around for features that I new the location of in RD. It takes a bit to get used to it but becomes second nature pretty quickly. Mark

Hey Dave, Try adding a transparancy map to the Leaf portion of the shader to create a real leaf shape instead of a square. (one comes with Tree Druid, a maple I think) It will take the image to the next step of realism. Good work. Mark
Thread: realistic water in Carrara? | Forum: Carrara
Five things make it 'real': 1. Have an environment that reflects into the water. In the above sample I used the "Wind" from the 'scene' settings. (I like the irregularity of the clouds on the water) However, you should use the 'gradient' background otherwise. 2. Have a 'sea floor'. Really important if you use the 'Wind' function. (Make sure the sea floor is above Z=0) If you don't want to use a floor with the 'Wind' function designate the ground color to a dark blue, green or something for depth. 3. Make sure 'Light through transparency' is turned on in the Render Room. If it's not checked there will not be shadows cast on any of the objects or bump channels underneath. However, render time will be decrease if it is left off. (A good idea if you don't actuall have a sea floor and just want deep water.) 4. Adjust the water Bump Channel for complexity and irregularity. Hopefully the picture above helps out regarding that. 5. Do not 'color' the water. Color the transparency channel of the shader instead. Realistic water is a processor intensive. If your machine is slow (or even if it's fast) be prepared to wait a little bit while it does it's thing. Have fun getting wet. Mark

Using the 'sphere of attraction' in the mesh modler is still your best bet. You may have to subdivide the chest area to get a higher poly count so that the transition is smooth. Mark
