Matt, I find your rationale on the multiple voting thing to be somewhat specious and more than a little disingenuous. The basic, bedrock principle of the idea of voting in a democratic or pseudo-democratic system is ONE MAN, ONE VOTE. Period. Regardless of how many accounts an INDIVIDUAL has set up for themself, they are still only ONE PERSON. It is illegal in all democratic societies for a person to vote more than once per election for any given elected position and this is what is termed as the "normal operation of the community". Hope you don't get mad at me for speaking out, man - I like your wit and art and consider you a friend. Let's not cloud this issue with hyperbole. The bottom line is that voting more than once for the same image is CHEATING and does a disservice to those whom conform to the free and normal operation of any group. Now we can bandy about the other aspects of the Hot 20 or the supposed "popularity" of the artists that have works residing on the list and some points are well made. Personally, I'm not offended or bummed my image was bumped - I'm just honored so many thought enough of it to bestow such an honor that it made the list. A better thing might be to not have the same image stay up on the list for so long, which would give many more a chance to be on the list if that is what makes them happy or feel energized to keep going. The idea of creating and DISPLAYING images for ones self only seems ludicrous, too. Why display them at all, then? It would be illogical and a large waste of time that could be spent creating more. Truth is we all enjoy the creation of our images, but we post them in hopes someone else will like them, too. Been that way since we were little kids running thru the house with our latest stick-men drawings to show to Mom so's she could ooh and aah over them. Our "skill" as artists doesn't improve so much from "helpful critique/opinion" (though coaching on a personal level helps) as it does merely through practice and experience and encouragement of a new artist to continue can be a key factor in whether or not they bag it and move on or stick with it and become proficient with their chosen program(s) We ALL had to start somewhere. Anyhow - gotta get back to work - sorry for the "soapbox" junk... Rick

LOL!! Duh! I was so focused on looking at the 4th triangle and going "ooh ooh, I know I know"! that I never even looked at the transform sidebar! Man, its a wonder I can even spot a shrimp swimming under the bridge as observent as I am NOT! lol. Nice catch, Ally! :>)

Hi Miriah - I'm not sure, but I think the little green circle is a 4th triangle that has its three control points all at the same, or VERY close to the same locations. I've seen random .fla's that have had a triangle with them really super close before, but usually its something I do manually to minimize the areas of the flame that the triangle affects down to a small dot in the flame to get rid of them without losing the contribution it makes to the overall "flavor" of the image. Just a guess... Maybe click on it and see if it has its own set of parameters?

ROFLMAO!! Or one of those net acronyms that means something like "it is to guffaw". Aww, Keith - be nice. I think the floral pastie is VERY skillfully and artfully placed, giving sort of a mischevious, coquette-ish sort of vibe, ya know? :>) Pretty Primo Pastie Positioning! lol Wow - 28 votes has to be a record! Good thing I printed the page yesterday - I was pretty darn jazzed about it! Looks like a TOS thingie, I guess. Odd that someone would feel they have to pull a stunt like this in a gallery with such a supportive and friendly vibe as this one. The person only has one image, but I'd bet if they had been someone posting here regularly, they would have gotten lots of encouragement - and helpful critique - from everyone and would be having too much fun to think up stuff like this. Whaddaya want for nothing? Actually, I've heard of people having multiple galleries here under different names. Matt comes to mind - he was Midday Crisis and Criminally Insane simultaneously at one time, last year. I guess its conceivable someone could spend a bunch of time and make up 28 e-mail addresses and nicknames.... nah! In the immortal words of George Thurogood - "it don't confront me none..." lol
Thread: Any tips for Apo image focus? | Forum: Fractals
Hi Kat - Try to figure out which triangle has caused the blur and select it then, in the "Transform" tab, try lowering or raising the "weight" value by, say .1 or so. Ex: weight = 0.35681 - try 0.25681 or 0.45681. Or maybe try a larger change like + or - 0.3 or something. If you have added a triangle at some point during the Pythagorean Polygon Pulling, Pushing or Positioning Process Producing your Primo Picture (sorry - I just HAD to say that - gimme a sec to wipe off my monitor! lol), it may have been moved ever so slightly from the reference position? I guess you've tried moving them all around but maybe if there is a new one it needs to go precisely onto the dotted reference triangle? Or try to make one of the bigger triangles a notch or two smaller by clicking it while holding "cntl" and "shift". Just tossing out ideas - hope you get it figured out, I'd love to see your flame! Rick

BIG congrats, Joe - an honor very well deserved by both the artist and the image. Rock on, Spiralsmith!
Thread: Why does the Most Viewed Gallery only have the top 100 images? | Forum: Community Center
Not to mention the fact that, at least on the fractal page, the top 100 viewed images are not the correct ones. When Rendo was tweaking their database software on Oct 30- 31 last year, a glitch occurred that assigned like 100 viewings for each time ONE person viewed the images uploaded on those days. That's why you'll see lots of pix with like 1500 views in a gallery where 200 is considered a ton. As far as I know, this was never fixed/rectified - probably a tough one to fix for a lot of reasons both emotional and technical, I suppose.
Thread: MP3 File attached to picture | Forum: Community Center
Hi C-B Careful about linking songs to images. We used to do that quite a bit last summer and they made us quit because of copyright concerns with the creators of the music and, I suppose, the recording industry moguls and Metallica who are all up in arms about mp3 trading. It was really cool to have music that matched the vibe of the image play upon viewing and I really miss it but the admins made us quit...
Thread: Repost questions. | Forum: Fractals
I have occasionally edited an image, but usually within minutes of posting it because the jpeg didn't look good. Here's something you might want to do: I once got some suggestions from Tania (Mathefrax) on my "Candle Light Sonata" image that made LOTS of sense, so I decided to have some fun and IM'ed everyone who had commented and asked for opinions on the reworked image I re-posted. Then, I reworked it again until everyone was happy with it - including me - and it became final after 2 edits. It was kinda cool and was great for the sense of community here and I ended up with a MUCH better image. It was sort of "design by committee" and probably a copy of the finished image should have gone into each person who made suggestions' galleries, too - lol. I just replaced the re-posted image with the newer versions, IM'ed everyone that it was there and people came and re-commented as to whether it was an improvement over the original or not. It was lots of fun. I didn't keep the original after all was final - I'm really frugal about disk space since I lived with a 2.1G hard drive for a long time! - lol. Maybe if you don't want to re-post, just tell the ones who made the suggestions and they could come back and let you know what they think? Reckon this is a longwinded way of saying I agree with Linda - whatever you feel is best is the thing to do. Rick

I agree with what Viv said, above. You have to go thru TONS of random batches to find a few really cool and different flames. You can, however, "hedge your bets" and "stack the deck in your favor" by limiting the variables used in the calculation of the random batch - either as I wrote above or, probably better, as you go thru lots of random flames keep track of what combo's of "variations", ie "linear" or "bent" or others, make the type of flames that interest you the most and then set the Options/Random tab to use only those variations. You'll have a better chance to get flames you like. Another thing I like to do is, after I've tugged the ol' three-siders in a flame with 2 triangles around some, add another triangle. It always adds one with a "Linear" transform and it does some neat things to the flame once you move it just a bit. It does get a bit out of hand, though, and tends to spread the flame out a lot. Or, if there's lots of triangles, start deleting them till you only have 2 or 3 and mess with those. There used to be a variable under the transform tab at the bottom labelled "p". I notice now, in beta15, it is different but there is one called "weight". The "p" factor used to change the probability of a "hit" by the gradient (I think - lol) for the triangle selected and you could experiment with changing the first significant bit of this number to thicken up a flame. I assume the "weight' parameter does the same thing. I don't usually mess with it much because, if the truth be known (and eventually it always is! lol) most of the flames I've ever made have pretty much "drawn themselves" and I'm way to slow and lazy to actually try to really pay attention and figure out exactly what makes a flame do specific things other than I've noticed long, skinny triangles make spiky, skinny flames. Now if I could find some long, skinny pizza slices maybe I could lose a bit of weight and become "long and skinny", too! lol Gotta get back in the gym....sure....definitely will.....absulutely....well.....maybe after just a FEW more random batches, ok?" :>)
Thread: Apo Help | Forum: Fractals
Hi! I've found the best results as far as solid lookng flames come from 1) limiting the number of transforms (triangles) in the Options/Random tab to 2 - 3 transforms and 2) limit the variations used in random batches to "Linear" and "Sinusoidal". Many, if not most, of the coolest (?? lol) flames (IMHO) I've seen were created with just 2 triangles. Also, edit the number in parentheses after "RotateReference" in the default animation script to something smaller than the default "3.6". I use 1.6 or 0.6, The smaller the number, the slower the flame rotates and its easier to catch those cool shapes that appear for a split second as it rotates. Open one of the Scripts like "spiralize" or "make bi-lateral" and click the green, "run script" arrow and see how you like those. And, in general, just move the triamgles around or re-shape them with the a,b or c corners. Skinny triangles (sounds like a cool name for a band! lol) tend to make harder, lined flames and thick ones tend to fill in the gaps between lines better. Have fun, BUT... if you start idly, unconsciously repositioning and arranging the slices of a pizza at dinner, be prepared to enter rehab at Addled Apo Addicts Anonymous (quad A) for an extended time to cure "triangle fixation"! lol Rick
Thread: Apo to UF3 alpha density question... | Forum: Fractals
Hi Eric - There are two ways I use to get back the "substance" of a flame when I'm using it with UF layers. 1) you can increase the "sample density" to something really big - say 1000-3000. Takes a while to render at that density, though. Apo beta14 seems to know when something needs more samples because it seems to increase the density on a lot of the flames I export, sometimes to like 1700. 2) Another trick I use is to just add multiple duplicates of the flame over itself in the layer stack with transparent background and "normal" merge mode. This is best done AFTER you resize the image to something bigger like to use for desktop wallpaper. Just duplicating once and using the "hard light" merge mode can brighten up the colors some, too. The best thing is to try to make flames that have hard, defined edges. Tug the triangles a bit to see if you can find the "sweet spot" or open the "transform" tab and play with raising or lowering the probability of a "hit" on each triangle - the bottom, "p" parameter. To get a rendered version of an UF image with flames, I've sometimes made versions with the flames taken out, rendered the UF layers, exported them to a folder, then exported the flames in .png format with transparency and reassembled them in Photoshop. I did that with the dock pilings(all flame) in my "Message in a Bottle" image and with the driftwood flames in my "Archipelago" image. Hope some of this is helpful... Rick

Wow! Hi Scott - its truly an honor to have you here. I use only Mark Townsend's Apophysis in my fractals - almost always in conjunction with fractal layers generated by Ultrafractal. Flames are extremely beautiful in the luminence of their colors as stand alone images and I find them to be invaluable when used with UF fractals as texturing tools as well. A neat thing to be able to do with them would be to have the ability to zoom in on sections without losing density - though that is probably an Apophysis specific thing and not something inherent in the flames themselves(?).
