Thread: 2 Hours to render this? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Er...what operating system are you guys running? I did a quicky test render at production quality of default Don in his default clothes with dynamic hair and it took under 10 minutes. It was a close-up of his face though. I don't know if that would quicken things up that much though. I'm running Windows 98SE on a speedy little Celeron 850MHz with 512MB RAM. Lammoth
Thread: Poser 5 Face Room Problems | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I haven't had any of these problems (then again, I am taking time to read the manual and am tip-toeing around in each room slowly). However, in the main pose room, the window used to view the figure acts erratically. The view flips from normal single view to a four- or three-pane view at random, and the program insists on enabling animation...even though I repeatedly shut that off. This is quite annoying when trying to alter the figure's expression; I make Don frown, then suddenly he starts moving through the whole range of expression in an endless loop! Sometimes his forehead caves in under the effort (rather disconcerting when he looks at me with a leer on his lips and a concave forehead as if he died by pickaxe). Lammoth

Yes, Anything Grows does come in a C2 version. I'm gonna go buy that stuff now. :) Alduin dor Lammoth

Wouldn't just copying the legs and ever-so-slightly enlarging them, then parenting these copies to the original work? Make a texture and transmap for them and you've got conforming hose. Maybe. I'vr never tried this. Alduin dor Lammoth
Thread: P5 Hair | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
People have said clothing will export, others say maybe. What I meant by exporting dynamic clothing was exporting the draped cloth result, not the ability to continue to futz with the cloth in another program. So if I put a shirt on the Poser 5 male and make it "cloth" and then export the full figure, will the shirt export as a static mesh with him as it looks in Poser 5 with all the wrinkles and folds? I would think so since it is a mesh deform. This would cut my worktime by months. Hair: same deal. I get the hair looking right, maybe do an animation to get the hair to blow across the face and stop the animation at a choice frame. I then export the full figure. Would the hair export as a static mesh with the figure? I would hope so since the hair is supposed to be "strand-based". This would also cut months off my work schedule. I am not very concerned about polygon count. If the hair doesn't appear in my renderer of choice (Carrara Studio 2), it does have its own hair-growth function through a 3rd party plugin. However, it is geared toward fur and human hair looks more like a chia pet. :( I am not interested in making animations, but realistic still images of people in motion (or standing still if the job demands it). I've heard the Poser 5 renderer is spiffy, and I've seen some images done with it. It does look nice, but making a cityscape and parkland of a square kilometer in Poser 5 (with quite a few hundred imported objects) would likely be unfeasible. Alduin

So it seems I have purchased Poser 5 for almost a complete loss. Since hair and dynamically conforming clothing cannot be exported to another application, the only advantage P5 has for me over P4 is the greater control over the facial morphs. For over $200, just having improved facial control is pathetic. I really am not looking forward to the continued drudgery of hand-painting in hair and clothing!

Considering Poser 5 was originally due to ship on the 15th, this earlier date (started the 6th!) is quite amazing.

I'll "upgrade" (yeah, I don't consider XP an upgrade), but not to XP. Maybe to the Version After XP or beyond, when my hardware I'm using now that XP doesn't like is worn out, etc.

Yes I played AD&D 2nd Ed. and purchased the Spelljammer boxed sets and a few expansion books. It was a great extension and I am sad it wasn't explored more by TSR. I'd pour over the deck plans and the Nautiloid is one of my favorite ships. Mmm, I never thought of making 3D models from the deckplans. Maybe I'll do the hammerhead or that wonderful squidship, or the dragonfly. Your ship looks very accurate, though the oars are on two rows on the ship's card in the Spelljammer box set. The window is beautiful.
Thread: BIG BIG BIG problem with Bryce 5...need help URGENTLY! | Forum: Bryce
Running it under Windows XP isn't helping your cause either. WinXP tends to slow down computers by about half their speed when compared to Win98SE due to a ton of overhead XP performs (I have two machines in the house, one a Celeron 850MHz on Win98SE and one a P4 1.6Ghz on WinXP and the Celeron seems slightly faster than the P4!). This might impact render times. What others said above is also true. If there is ovelapping transparances, refractions, or volumetric lights/solids, it could takes several minutes for the 'render line' to nudge down a row. Just leave the render to do its thing overnight and see how far it got by morning. It should have moved.

I started with Bryce 4 and moved to Bryce 5 a year later (when it was new). I enjoy B5, especially for its network renderer. Made it possible to render my challenge entry in 1 hour instead of the 6 my computer estimated if it had done it alone. If Bryce 6 is going to only support Windows XP though, I will be sticking with Bryce 5. I'm not upgrading my OS too (and all the hardware and other software that hates WinXP). Ah! What is this soapbox I'm standing on?
Thread: Carrara 2 - Well how is it? | Forum: Carrara
I use Bryce 5, and yes, Bryce 5 does have caustics, though I use them sparingly. Eats up much render time (Bryce ain't known for its fast rendering you know!). I have ordered CS2 and so I should have my hands on it in about 10 days. I have been fighting with Ray Dream Studio 5.5 until now and have grown tired of its bugs. Alduin
