holy crap! most vendors work very hard and for long hours to create a product. but i only ever see whinging because we do not practically GIVE away our creations. maybe some of you should walk in a vendors shoes before you complain at prices..........
Would you rather we not buy them at all? Because for many of us that is the only alternative. Most of us can't afford to purchase more than 25 to 50 USD worth of products per month (I can usually afford 50~150 per month, but when there are other competing sites that we split our spending between, then we're forced to wait until something is 50~70% off. (MAYBE 40% if it's something that we're at the edge of our seat to get) The fact is, for many customers, full price isn't an option (for me it probably is, if I limited myself to 5 or less products per month here, and restricted the rest of my monthly purchases to a few PC items at Daz.)
What you saying is that that effort isn't worth paying more then a dime for.
It doesn't matter if it's worth 100 bucks. If someone doesn't have 100 bucks to spend, or if they only have 200 bucks and have to prioritize on what they want to get between Daz, formerly RDNA, Hivewire, CGBytes, etc., then they simply cannot afford it, or alternatively will have to prioritize-- which isn't easy when you don't know what will be on sale on each site and by how much for the remainder of the month.
For the record I have picked up many items from Daz at 70%+ off, or $3-$5, admitted that is for some quite old Poser content that has probably earned the Vendor a fair bit over the years. They work in Poser and many are the same quality of a lot of the stuff here so there are sales that are real sales.
Excellent point-- that is a major problem here-- DAZ infrequently (between 2x a month to once every 3 months) will have a flash or even blink sale where the current gen products are 40 or 50% off, previous gen 50 or 60% off, previous genx2 60 to 70% off, and V4/M4 products 80% off. V4/M4 80% off sales are much more frequent than the other categories, and have been for the last two years.
Unfortunately, Rendo discards stagnating products far too easily (and vendors don't even have a choice over the matter, which IMO is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!! It should be 100% up to the vendors when and if they pull their own products) I don't get why 7 year old and older clearance items can't be on sale more often, while products made within the past 4 years are only on 40~60% off sale once or twice a year IF THE VENDOR APPROVES (during the holiday season and maybe 1 other time of year-- maybe.) As I said, I think it's wrong and that publishers/brokers have no right to decide if and when a vendor's or developer's product is on sale-- the publishers/brokers didn't make it, so they have no right to dictate when it is on discount and by how much.

The pricing I set as a vendor is generally lower than similar items like it at Daz, so 50% off really isn't needed to have the similar prices or lower prices than Daz (even when theirs is at a big 50% or more discount). But, there are many times through-out the year that we have group sales or store sales that are around the 50% mark (or more). So, if you're goal is by items at a bigger discount, you should really check into the PRIME membership. The extra discounts and coupons pays for itself in less than a month depending on what you buy and how often you buy. As a Renderosity vendor, I'd rather sale here because of the freedom we are given to how we price our products, our ability to put them on sale, have special Prime FLASH deals, create bundle deals and participate in the group sales (that often have some cool, fun themes).
Do yourself a favor and check-out the prime deals here https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/?br=prime and here https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/?TopID=539133. You won't see the general prices that low at Daz.
Many of us want nothing to do with Prime ever since you neutered it thanks to the fact that you had the nerve to remove 100% royalties to vendors, these forums STILL USE THE ACCURSED MARKDOWN, and your asinine no-competing freebies sites WHICH NO OTHER COMPETING POSER MP SITE DOES!!! I still consider Platinum Club to be a far better deal than Prime-- it was close to equal, if not even better than PC back before you neutered it.
And you have only in the past few weeks began to run sales of more than 40% off for non-prime members (and I seem to recall reading not long ago that you actually placed a LIMIT on vendors of a max of 40% off discount for non prime members-- I'm glad to see that you are at least letting them set their own sales again. Or at least I hope you are-- IMO it should be entirely up to the vendor whether or not to put their products on sale and by how much-- Daz does that with brokered products, and it's one of the things that bothers me the most about them. I don't care if they do that with Daz Original products, just like I don't care if Rendo does that with a product by say-- Rhiannon or Graycloud that is also an Rpublishing product)
Thread: Linking to freestuff items | Forum: Freestuff
You'd think that this would be a wakeup call, but if the loss LaurieA, SnarlyGribbly, and 3DCheapskate haven't pulled the upper management's/TPtB's heads out from you-know-where, nothing will.
In the meantime, the forum admins here are busting their backsides, trying to find any way-- ANY possible way to fix a problem that they are utterly helpless to do anything about.
Thread: My opinion and thoughts. | Forum: Community Center
I added in smiley faces wasn't because I was trying to be "cheery" or trying to sound "patronizing," it was because I was trying to sound nice and frinedly, but unfortunately, it had the opposite effect.
I see. The problem is that it came across as a friendly smile, or alternatively, the "help desk smile" (you know, the one the employer tells you you have to give everyone), or worst, the Walmart greeter smile minus some of the creepiness. Combine this with very corporate-type responses or posts in threads, which makes for a very impersonal response, esp. when it sounds like one of those automated email responses you tend to get when you contact a large company about something. It came across as disingenuous at best, patronizing at worst, because, well-- people don't naturally smile when they open the door to a wall of high velocity flames or when the place is crumbling all around them.
I take blame for only now bringing the "it feels impersonal" point. With all the yapping and being a broken record that I've done since last summer, you'd think that I would have thought about that while posting just once.
I'm still doing my best to try and fix this community, but it will take time, trust and some serious re-building. But, since I KNOW you guys love this community - as do I - so I'm going to do my best to address your concerns.
The problem is, that your best may be futile, as many of the complaints are in regards to things that either TPtB have the final say in, or something that is entirely up to them. And I apologize if my statement in this regards in the previous post came off as hostile. It was more out of bitterness, though admittedly there was SOME hostility there (but not towards you or the other forum admins)
So, firstly, I hear the forums aren't easy to use. Can someone please provide me with an example so I can address this?
Mostly due to the markdown language-- I can never remember which punctuation does what, and clicking the tabs often inserts a space in between the punctuation mark and either the beginning or ending of the text, so that you have to go back and edit out the space. Then there are those of us who like to use those floor hashes and asterisks, but unfortunately we can't, so it makes bullet points difficult to make. This is one of those examples of things that are completely out of your control-- unless you and the other admins can somehow convince TPtB that Markdown is a really crappy language.
Also, what about the gallery? What are the issues with that?
I can't speak about any other issues, but the most common problem is that the search function on the gallery, just like the MP and freestuff searches, sucks. I'm not going to bother giving you examples since other people have done it within the past few months, and I'm too lazy right now.

I promise to try harder in letting you guys be part of the decision-making
Unless we are part of TPtB's decision making, then it won't make any difference. You can do everything in your power and it won't do a thing to fix the situation, simply because it has become clear that you and the other admins are absolutely powerless to whip TPtB into shape (which is desperately needed if this site is to survive) and get them to realize how self-destructive their Prime neutering, poorly excuted redesigns, the crappy/modest/super-short sales, and offsite freebie/MP/personal link ban (which the competition does not engage in) is.
that doesn't mean that we're not listening. I apologize if it seems like I'm belittling or talking to you guys like children.
The problem is that TPtB are not listening, and your silence (specifically lack of complaining or voiced critisicm to TPtB's decisions) suggests to us that you agree with every one of their decisions. This causes people to view you as an accomplice to the destruction of this site, and also results in them not trusting you. Admins who have kept silent or so much as voiced thinly-veiled disagreement with specific aspects of the new rule, or complained about how TPtB refuse to listen to them, are not viewed as accomplices, or at least not to the same degree. Admins like LPR who have been exponentially more helpful in answering questions are trusted more. Admins who do not post smileys or act all cheery as the site crumbles all around them, and as they get yelled at are trusted more (because this makes your smileys... look like a Walmart Greeter smile-- minus the creepy aspect, that is) Which from the looks of it you have at least stopped, and I sincerely thank you very much for that, and for listening to us about that, as for some of us it did feel a bit patronizing.
Thread: I'm Sad To Say That I'm Removing My Freebies From Renderosity | Forum: Freestuff
The problem is that Rendo is tackling this entirely the wrong way-- they are not going after the two main causes of decreased traffic, which are abyssal web design and paltry sales (esp. the neutering of Prime) Bad web design is probably the main and overwhelming reason why so few non-vendor freebies are uploaded to Renderosity, anymore. TPtB don't seem to care, though, and some of the admins don't, either (UVDan probably does, and possibly LPR to a certain degree based on one of his posts)
I am not sure whether or not web design or prime neutering has hurt traffic more-- though I would wager a guess that it is the former.
And admins (to run by TPtB) problem is more than just BAD web design-- it is also the frequency of radical redesigns. I see plenty of people post who are still unaware of for instance, the ability to click "all vendors" then use the drop-down list instead of loading every individual avatar.
I see people who still don't know that you can type a vendor name into the Wishlist search and narrow all products to that vendor.
It does not help that the programmers (or is it just one programmer?) are understaffed, underskilled, and overworked, and only return feature functionality or install new features gradually over a period of 6 months.
Understand that some of your customers are not tech savvy, do not adapt easily to new designs/workflows, or simply do not have the time to play around with the site and see what they can and cannot do. People are accustomed to certain site features.
It does not help that Rendo puts so many huge banners everywhere. The more clutter you have on the webpage, the harder it is to find important site features such as the "deals" link, search bars, or drop-down menus.
(Also, uh, Hope, maybe you could paste this sentence below to TPtB directly-- a paraphrasing runs the risk of losing the message)
I've said this countless times, TPtB, but it is painfully clear, based on many of the major decisions that you have made within the past year, that you are not looking at what the competition is doing-- this is one of the most basic rules for a successful business.
I will bring up the relevant issue of site redesign. None of your competitors overhaul the site design every year. Customers find site redesigns to be confusing, and all adapt to it at different rates. To this day there are forumites who are unable to navigate the site or find some of its features.
Thread: Movie Plot Generator | Forum: Writers
Shouldn't this be in the Writers' forum? The community center is for topics relating to the site, 3D news, and the 3D community (on and off-site)
On topic: Yeah, you can find all sorts of useful generators. I once needed a name for a cloak-and-dagger type criminal syndicate for a fantasy fic, but couldn't think of one. So I looked for a name generator of such things. Found one, and managed to come up with a name :) Now I just need an insignia.
Thread: OT? Runtimedna mergine with DAZ. Will they still support Poser? | Forum: Community Center
the important thing is the art we can get from them, this is the main thing, but it is important the tool itself too, there are better tools, easier, or just you are happy with the way of doing things, so a tool is a tool, but there are better tools, so it is important what tool to choose so you get the better results.
"Better" is a very subjective term-- everyone has their own definition of "better" and "best". Remember, each person has a different level of tech savvy, plasticity with learning curves, funds, computer RAM/memory, computer OS, and then come the personal preferences such as render time vs. scene/mat setup time, what they use the software for (games vs. comics vs. high-res renders), what types of scenes/models they render (terrains vs. people vs. nature scenes vs space/planets)
For some people, a more limited or simpler software such as Poser, Bryce, or DAZ is preferrable to powerful "sandbox" programs like Blender or 3DSMax, where the versatility and customization may be confusing.
It is just like the OS debate-- for some people, Windows or Mac are all they need. Others would prefer a more versatile and DIY-type OS such as Linux-- and even with Linux now, there are dozens of builds, some easier to use than others. In the end, their choice OS depends on what purposes they use their computers for, their tech skills, brain plasticity, capacity for long-term/short term memory (and further for some, their ability to NOT confuse one thing for another-- e.g. a trilinguist getting their words or pronunciations mixed up), their preferences to stick with what they know vs. try new things, and for some-- their political/ethical views.
Thread: Newsletter Sales Timezone Confusion | Forum: Community Center
I think he's referring to the fact that they involve coupons rather than direct sales.
Also, it seems that TPtB's solution to the concerns raised by the admins is to simply end the sales, period -_- "my way or the highway" I guess.

They do, but the software compatibility category box results are terribad-- even worse than the marketplace and freestuff searches combined!

Wow. Rendo, if this isn't a wakeup call, I don't know what is. You have now lost Snarlygribbly, LaurieA, and 3DCheapskate.

Okay - as I said, ask anyway. What do you want to know about me so you guys can trust and respect me?
Thanks, @Johnny.
Trust and respect don't come from answering questions about yourself. They come from people observing your actions. It takes a while.
Agreed.

• It doesn't count unless you have built it from scratch Tribe (Somewhat elitist group that often feel Poser would be just as complete without a render engine)
To be fair, the equivalent demographic among the Blender artists are far worse about this. They're just like the Linux equivalent of the tribe; very talented tech-savvy individuals who insist that their preferred software is "more user friendly" and easier to use than Windows/Mac/Poser/Daz and unable to comprehend that not everyone is tech savvy like they are. Another telltale sign is that they complain that Windows/Mac/Poser/Daz are "locked" (and I do agree with them on this point) "Locked" referring to customizability.
• I use Poser and Daz Studio Tribe. ( A rare, small and somewhat shy group. But they can be seen occasionally enjoying a diverse range of products and services, using them in the best way they see fit to complete set task.)
I see them more often than you are alluding to. Granted, you see them more often OUTSIDE of the Poser forums.
• The I have lots of old content and want perpetual support forever of that old content Tribe (Most of this group are peaceful and generous, unless the creators of Poser hint that there may be changes to back compatibility in the next version, they then can immediately transform into organised and militant groups that refuse to offer any type of compromise or give any quarter until their demands are met.)
I don't blame them at all. Not a Poser user, but backwards-compatability is a requirement for me for anything.
• I don't buy much because vendors don't support my favourite old figure Tribe (A peaceful tribe that tend to accept that they can't expect their treasured figure to be mainstream forever, but believe in protecting and preserving the articles of that figure.)
Not all of them are peaceful. There's a belligerent one on the RDNA forums who likes Gen 3 figures. The overwhelming majority are indeed peaceful, though.
I don't think those tribes you talk exist
Oh, they definitely exist. Some in far greater numbers than others-- e.g. the contemptuous "build it yourself" ones are small in number among Poser users, but in great number among hardcore Blender users and Linux users. Among Blender users some among this tribe even look down upon Blender users who do not create their own content instead of DLing content from Blendswap etc. (the exception being scripts-- I am not aware of anyone in the Linux or Blender tribe who look down on someone for using someone else's script, though I have seen "make your own script instead of whining that nobody else will make it for you, it's so easy to make a script, anyone can do it" types.)

LPR: Thank you for clarifying about this. In the future though it might help to inform people a bit ahead of time that you're currently working on it.
I don't blame the members for being upset and covered it at the top of this discussion, these changes affect us all and I do want to work through them with you.
Don't forget that on top of that, emotions are also high about Daz's DRM and RDNA being merged with Daz. All of this within a relatively short time period (encryption rolled out at DAZ what, 2 months ago?) It isn't a factor in my behavior, but there are a lot of people who feel like the 3D hobbyist world is crumbling around them.
And Freebass, that was really uncalled for. You should consider yourself lucky that your post hasn't been modded (yet)
