a very cheap solution is to mount your lens with an inversion ring...
i've obtained surprising result with a 18mm inverted! ...
the bad thing is the darkness of the lens and the loss of automatism of the camera...
a ring may cost 5-10 dollars...

(and sorry for my poor english)

the Canon MP-E 65mm is surely a beautiful toy :)
i use a canon 100mm macro and the kenko extension tube... works fine

if you set the white balance of your camera (for example to the grass), you'll obtain white grass and yellow skies...
if you'll set to "auto" probably you'll obtain a total red image... nothing to do with it...
if you'll set to "tungsten" you'll be able to obtain orange skies and pink foliage...
:)
just play with it

tripod is strongly reccomended in this kind of shots!
good start and white balance settings... cannot understand the cyan "reflection" on some leaves... i love the fourth, it shows at best the infrared effect!

you've played a lot with your new toy :) you've exposed excellently all your shots! what do you think to make some shot with colours? for the hotspot... yes... are lens! maybe you'll see something strange in full telephoto mode...

you've reason... my eos350d requires an extremely long exposure time (sometimes is not so cool)... 18-55 objective makes an extremely visible hot spot! with a simple olympusc740 exposure time was very short and without hot spot! my desires about infrared cameras are the sames as you! let us know what you will do :)

i've seen some user in the past uploadin' some kind of shots with a camera with a cuted ir filter and an ir filter over the objective... is this what you mean? i remember that the grain was incredibly visible due to the sensibility of the sensor...
