@ diomede:
I don't think it can be done easily in Carrara in a scene with complex characters and outfits, so I won't even try. I actually wanted to submit this as a feature request several years ago, but I didn't. I think a plugin would be the cleanest solution to achieve this effect.
I want to see your solution with the camera from several angles, inside a room with furniture, to prove that it works in every situation.
Thread: Carrara Render Challenge: V4 To Be A Vampire In Front Of A Mirror... | Forum: Carrara
@ diomede:
I looked at the 3 entries in the 'other' forum. I would have preferred that the entries were made here though.
Your render does not reflect the environment, so maybe not all the mirror surface is reflective. Besides the camera angle with the mirror is too steep, so maybe it's a camera trick. I should have added that the lens must be perpendicular to the mirror plane to not more than maybe plus or minus 10 degrees.
In the other 2 renders the camera angle with the mirror is also too steep, so we don't know, although the entire surface of the mirror seems to be reflective.
Using a shader technique for a vampire effect might work for an object with simple geometry and simple shader, like a cube with a single color, but for a model like V4 wearing an evening gown the solution would be very hard to use, so it is not a general purpose solution.
I repeat the links I mentioned above for reference: The Lost Boys and the 2:35 of The Fearless Vampire Killers.

@ Wonga:
This is a very noble attempt Wonga, and you came very close. But the challenge clearly states that it must be a 'Vampire Effect'. Everything must reflect in the mirror, except the vampire, like the 2:35 of this clip See Link.
Thread: Why I Think Genesis 3 In Carrara Will Never Ever Happen... | Forum: Carrara
@ DustRider:
My goal in this thread is (or was) to explain why, IN THE OPINION OF THIS VERY EXPERIENCED SOFTWARE DEVELOPER AND DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, integrating the Genesis 3 and 8 code into Carrara's existing - and aging - infrastructure would be very difficult, possibly even impossible.
Please read through my posts above and explain what part(s) of them are signs of trolling.

@ DustRider:
The point I am making in this thread is that IN THIS USER's OPINION spending development money on Bryce 8 makes a lot more sense than on Carrara 9, both from an engineering perspective and from a marketing angle. I have explained some of my arguments in the posts above, and I will explain some more in future posts, as soon as I have time.
This thread deals as much with Carrara as it does with Bryce. I have chosen to post it in this forum. It is not of a trolling nature, nor is it provocative, but it's definitely thought-provoking.
Please abstain from being rude, obnoxious, or threatening.

I wanted to bring back to life this old thread about why a Carrara9 with support for the newer Genesis3 and Genesis8 characters will never ever happen.
P.S. Add Genesis 8 to the title to read: 'Why I Think Genesis 3 And Genesis 8 In Carrara Will Never Ever Happen...'

Let's keep BOTH Bryce and Carrara alive and kicking! They're both great.
Carrara is certainly a nice program, but it's cornered into irrelevance. In the Daz products line-up, spending development money on Bryce, and to some extent Hexagon, still make sense, while spending money on Carrara is an unwise investment, imho.

note that if you. have a Mac OS/X it doesn't work on newer version and def not 10.13 and will not in the future.
Apple recently announced that, as of Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave), support for Open GL will be deprecated. See Link.
The Open GL de-support will probably not happen overnight, bur all apps using Open GL on the Mac are living on borrowed time, and that includes Carrara.

I like Bryce for what it does. If anyone would like to use Bryce for landscapes and then bring them to Carrara, the late great Cripeman has an excellent tutorial. https://youtu.be/5b9c4CW2c18
Bryce is still worth spending development money for. Carrara may be nice and cute, but Bryce is the genuine article.

a man of straw throwing stones, I never saw a render of M4 walking and chewing gum by him in any software, just a premade iClone scene of Heidi dancing that comes with it as a default project. In fact the one decent animation he did share was in fact made by him in Carrara so I think he is just winding us up out of boredom.
Such a sour grape.

Recently I have been digging into Bryce and it has been a very rewarding experience. Bryce has numerous very unique features that make it still a very relevant software.
I personally believe that a rejuvenated Bryce will be a smashing sale success. If I were in charge of product developments at Daz3D and if I had, say, a $1M development budget to spend on Carrara, Bryce and Hexagon, I would spend 90% of the funds on Bryce, 10% on Hexagon, and zilch on Carrara.
Note that when I say I will spend only 10% of the development funds on Hexagon, it's not because Hexagon isn't worth spending money on, quite to the contrary. But because Hexagon, in its current state, is fairly feature complete and does a very good job at what it was originally designed for.

A total lack of entries in this thread proves only what I was suspecting all along: You cannot create a 'Vampire Effect' in Carrara. You cannot tell Carrara that a certain object, or a certain surface, does not reflect in a mirror.
Well, Shade3D has such a feature. You can specify that a given surface has no reflection, for a neat and clean vampire effect. As soon as I have time I will give you all a solid proof of this very clever feature in Shade3D.

thank you for the link dr. Bernie but what they say? my japanese is poor
The link says Shafe3D ver. 18, in very English. It means Shade 18 is released. Hopefully there will soon be an English version too. If not you will have to learn Japanese, which isn't a bad thing.
Thread: Shade3D As Carrara Replacement: Man, This Is Radical... | Forum: Carrara
In March 2018 they announced that no English version of Shade 17 will be released, probably because on June 15th 2018, i.e. today, they released Shade 18 (See This Link). It was pointless to make an English version only to have it superseded 4 months later.
Shade is among the very rare 3D apps to get a major update almost every year.
