Subject: Unreal As Carrara Replacement: It's Unreal, It's Insane, And It's Free...

dr_bernie ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2018 at 1:47 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 1:18 AM

First-off, I got to emphasize that considering Unreal as a replacement for Carrara is like considering a spacship cruising at warp speed as a replacement to a 2004 Toyota Corolla clunker. They're just not in the same league, really.

Second-off, I won't give any link to the Unreal web site, because if at your age you don't know what Unreal is, then your case is desperate.

I'll begin by saying that Unreal is not just a game engine with space-age performances, it is also used worldwide by architects, advertising firms, engineering firms, TV stations, movie producers, etc, etc.

Before going into a lengthy review of Unreal, let me direct you to these 3 teasers to give you a taste of things to come. And don't forget, these teasers are REAL-TIME renders, not renders that took 6 months with 500 computers.

See this link, and this link, and this link.

More on UE4 later, if I have time.

Thinking about to put you on my ignore list - the wooing away of Carrara Users to other software is ridiculous... What is the deal with this? Why do you regularly do this? What is the reason you hate Carrara? If someone wants to leave Carrara, she or he can make an own decision.

Live Long and Prosper

Unreal doesn’t show me anything that would draw me away from Carrara. What can it do besides render?

Xerxes0002 ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2018 at 7:06 PM

How about Unity then.

pappy411 ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2018 at 7:29 PM

Unity and Unreal are game engines. Don’t interest me at all. Prefer modeling 3D and rendering for stills and animations.

In a democracy, each one has the right to put forward its arguments, but in the condition that they are in connection with the current topic. In the case of " DR. (Doctor? , Director?, Decimator?) Bernie ", it became a fierce psychopatic attack against the Carrara users. I always had a very open spirit and I don't like to ignore somebody but in this case, I would like to know where this"IGNORE" button is!

DUDU -

Under each message there are five buttons, its the one on the far right. If you hover the mouse, you get a little popup that says "Ignore User".

And BTW, you may have noticed the new products at DAZ, the "Ice Hotel" with a Bedroom, Lobby, Exterior and Bar/Restaurant, also available as a bundle. I recall you did a very nice live action video of the real thing somewhere up around the Arctic Circle.

Carrara and Unity/UnReal play nice together.

To be clear, UnReal and Unity are fantastic game authoring and compiling software. But, you can't create content in the programs themselves.

I've created assets for games, and even a few tutorials about integrating Carrara and Poser into Unity. Unity is also something we use extensively in my current engagement.

There is a lot of parity between Unity and UnReal, but most of my exposure is to Unity. It is a blast to create assets in Carrara (or any CG program) and bring them into an interactive environment to play. BTW, there is a HUGE market for content via the Unity store - if anybody is interested in having a hobby-job.

As an official art mercenary, I don't have a favorite software, but use whatever gets the job done, including Carrara. For all the neg-speak, even after all these years, Carrara is pretty solid. I use a bunch of 'current' software. The things Carrara doesn't have that newer software does, are the kind of things 99% of users wouldn't ever use anyway. Heck most Carrara users don't use 80% of Carrara's abilities, in my jaded opinion.

Just saying...

Oh, hi everybody.

I am proof of that. 💫

I use DAZ studio, Poser, Zbrush, iClone, Unreal and Blender quite a lot too and would discuss it here too if Carrara is involved

I buy DAZ 3D and Content Paradise products and stuff from CGAxis and other sites as well as Renderosity ones but do not discuss them here,

@ Mark Bremmer:

Thanks Mark for your comments and feedbacks. Very valuable, as always.

I agree with you, Unity and Unreal are both top-notch game engines, quite on par with each other. The only reason I went with Unreal is that Unreal gives you their entire package at no charge, while Unity leaves some functionalities out of their free version. Other than that everything we say in this thread about Unreal should apply word for word to Unity as well.
