Wow. Many thanks for the responses: this has helped me focus on what's important: raw grunt power. Looks like I'll go with a "safe" (known, stable) option of dual 1Ghz PIII's in an ABit VP6 board with 2Gb of RAM. The RAID is appealing plus I don't have to change my beloved SuperMicro case or upgrade the PSU. I'll keep my "old" ASUS GeForce card and ATA66 drive for now. All this to render animations faster. Maybe I should have chosen a cheaper hobby, like diamond collecting. Thanks again, Mark

Thanks for posting the final piece. This reminds me very much of the Roger Dean covers of the 70's. Like the plants. Mark

Good one! The low viewpoint is very good but the colours and reflections make this something special. Which version of PhotoPaint did you use?

Heartfelt sympathies. My wife's laptop has just gone do-lalley. If everything is working again I suggest doing a few things 1. Running scandisk in thorough mode to check for bad disk sectors. If any are found, start saving for a new hard disk. 2. Put your newly created Windows 98 rescue disks somewhere safe. Creating them should have been an option when reinstalling the OS. If you didn't do it this time, do it next time. 3. I agree with Laurie: build your own PC's. It really pays off. After all, didn't artists make their own brushes once upon a time? If there's any help you need, let us know. Mark

Herv I'd never have thought of using terrains for modelling like this. Thanks for the clear explanation. I'll have to try this. Mark

Wow. Love the moonlight and interior lighting. I feel like I want to pan left and see what's illuminating the face. The arch and window seats are so real. How did you do the arch with a terrain? Mark

Just found Mem-Jolt, a little shareware program that frees up memeory automatically. It just gave me back 24Mb from a "clean" boot. At last I seem to able to run PhotoPaint, Amapi 6 and Vue 3 at the same time in 256Mb RAM. Free trial at the above URL. This is my last bit of techie input. Honest. I had a few resource problems and then discovered that one or two processes were running about which I knew nothing. Not all running processes are shown using Ctrl-Alt_Del. To see what's potentially hogging your resources by being loaded at boot up, try using IBS's StartUp Editor. It's free from the above URL. Apologies for getting all techie. :) MarkThread: Poser and BUM issues | Forum: Vue
Wow, a software house that not only acknowledges problems but actively consults the users to get it fixed. Impressive. Good on yer e-on.

Amazing. Good use of the portrait format too. It's probably just a shadow but it looks like there's a little figure to the right of the top pool.

Reminds me of the flower clocks that that used to be common at English seaside resorts. Can the technique be adapted for leaves? It would make great ground cover for an autumnal scene.
