Oooh, a double-take. I hadn't thought of that. Cool! I think it makes sense that the sliding thing is a 2D phenomenon, with 3D I think there are more visual cues for the brain to interpret. Speaking of visual cues, I'm starting to get amazed at how much expression and character one can get from really small animation effort. Just a few keyframes, and your dude is already registering surprise and suspicion (or that's how it strikes me). Whee! This animation stuff is pretty fun.

He's cute! The bow tie cracked me up! You even did a head turn, which is gonna be the next challenge. So I guess now you are ahead, instead of late, you sneaky devil! Just curious... have you experimented at all with animating the iris? You might be able to create a funny cartoonish effect where your creature sees something that worries him, and his iris constricts. I'd be curious to see what that would look like, hint hint (subtle, ain't I?). Hmm... just had another thought, does the technique work with 3 colors? And does the pattern have to be circular (is there a way to offset it)? I'm thinking of cats eyes, being adjustable from vertical slits to round pupils that almost fill the iris. I think what the book said about drawing 2D pupils applies to 3D; yours and Kixum's eyes seem friendlier looking than the ones I did. By the way: Fair warning, guys. I checked out a bunch of books about cartooning from the library this weekend, so now I'll be really dangerous. More questions, more challenges, more demands for you guys to partake in my fiendish experiments, heh heh heh. --Terri

Kixum, nice eye! Though I'm starting to feel like I'm being watched. To answer your questions. I'm still learning about textures, so the pupil is a separate object; it's a sphere that's been squished (a lot) in the y-direction. A disk would probably work, too. I just made sure the hotpoint/center was at the radius of the eyeball. I made the pupil a separate object, in case I wanted to animate separately, like make animate a size change that doesn't affect the rest of the eye. The book (The Animator's Workbook, by Tony White; turns out he has a web page, see above link) only uses the top lid for blinks, although both lids for squinting. Of course, this book is about drawn animation, so I'm still trying to figure out which "rules" apply to 3D. But, testing on my own eye, it does seem like the bottom lid does not move much, if at all, for a blink (I need to start keeping a mirror on my desk; I'm getting tired of sticking my finger in my eye to see what it's doing). --TerriThread: 100 Minute Challenge | Forum: Carrara

Yeah, I need to put a little more effort into the spline modeller. I feel like I'm still arm wrestling that feature of Carrara. I guess I better give this this challenge a try, but I better not hear any giggling out there when I post my result! --Terri

Geek, just checked out your tutorial. Neat technique. I think you meant to say "Cube" instead of "Cylinder", but the pictures make the approach very clear. Nice job. Also, a similar trick could also be used for - you guessed it - a blinking eye! Or a squinting one. Add a slightly smaller sphere, and maybe something more like a hemisphere, instead of the three quarter sphere for the upper eyelid. I'm off to give it a try, except I'll have to build my sphere parts in the vertex modeler; the boolean function tends to crash my computer. --Terri

Hey, three is still pretty darn economical, considering the results he got, so I'm prepared to overlook it. Heh. Besides, he revived a fond childhood memory, so what's an extra keyframe between friends? Which reminds me: Use as many key frames as you want on the blinking eye challenge. I think I'm going to use three, although one could probably use two, and add a reverse sequence to the gif. Neat opening graphic on your web page, Geek. I don't have much 3D on my web page (which I hope to change in the near future), but if anyone wants to see my sparse offerings, stop by at the link above.Thread: UV Mapper problem | Forum: Carrara
Dunno if this is the problem you're having, but sometimes I have better luck with the UV Mapper if I use Open and Close instead of Import and Export.

Geek, your English is better than a lot of people I know (here in the United States). Thanks for the tutorial, I'm off to check it out right now. --Terri

Nicely done. It reminds me of toy I played when I was little. Don't know about y'all, but I'm really getting a kick out of seeing all the different interpretations of Point A to Point B. I'm also amazed by how much I learned doing such a simple exercise.

Nice! Well done! You know, it would have done nicely for the Point A to Point B animation challenge. Didn't you want to share with the rest of the class? Seriously, I can't wait to see it textured. --Terri
