I bought like a 15$ senegal palm and the coconut palm $15 (which had a nice spread out top)
Are those lush series worth it? They look so video game card quality...(Ill give them a try in the distance id they save me memory population)

I started splurging for some of the $15 palms...(hopefully they wont be too high polyy count)(I been maxing out my scenes lately)

Sweet image! I have it as a fav myself...
but yes too long for render....as an FX pro this is far to long and the main reason why TG has failed in the fx community....
We would either matte paint it.....or do model of it in renderman or mental ray....which would slice trhough that...(or paint on top of that)
keep to landscapes TG! And its also the whole matte painting team from ILM endorses V6
the average matte is 70-140 hours (for something like that) 1-2 weeks

Also be very careful...,...too..if your flicking through sunsets...you might just pick one with an embedded radiosity...suddenly your scene jumps to 3 hour renders!

size does matter (mostly in rendering times). The following thread discuss how scale matters with renders...

100 miles ?(I hope you have a professional renderfarm).....
right off the bat ...it would be unlikely you woul be able to populate a 100 mile stretch of land with trees....(Im having problems with just a small moutain range)...maybe you render it out as a tilable matte painting?
good luck
Quote - Hello,
I´m starting to experience the wonders of the dem files and i´ve been asked to make a flight by a hundred of miles river wich lead to this question. How can i solve the scale issue? Do i work my model in the real scale or shall i reduce it ? What´s the best way to work with extensive dem files?
Thanks

Hi Paul,
We have 2 Arc Second (60 meter) data for Alaska. When you are on the Seamless website, and you click on the triangle beside Layer Extent, the section will expand. You can place a check mark in the box beside 2 Arc Second and the map will refresh to where we have 60 meter data available. If you want to download the data, just click on the download tab at the top right, uncheck 1 Arc Second and place a check mark in the box beside 2 Arc second.
Thanks
Laura

This is what they said....
Hello Paul,
Thank you for contacting the USGS EROS. We have two elevation products for areas outside of the U.S.
They are SRTM and GTOPO30. SRTM has the best resolution at 90 meters. You can find out more information on these products at: http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation.html
Have a great day!
Laura

I wanted to make some of my own color gradients for variations...so I went into the colormap files.......and they are labeld .clr files...
What is a .clr file?
Thread: grain in trees | Forum: Vue
they should have this in the menue.....as a button for vegetation controls.....
it should have nice button "variation"
then another little button "Add Picture gradiant"
then the last button that says "Blend"
(And it makes all these connections for you)
IMHO
this is a very important for realism in procedurals is variying the color of vegetation....
Chipp your support of this program is incrediable....E-on should start giving you some $$....I was getting so fustraited with it ......before your help

Chip,
Got it working. I would have never figured that out.
Procedural nodes make no sense to me.....
(forgive me I come from texture map land. Im used to laying out UVS and plugging in maps...not mixing nodes)
you said there is geekatplay version you did.?...can you link it?......I would like to hear the audio....
I get the blender node...and how its split...
I get what the random node does (although I would have never of found it)
but what does the object center do?
also doing this everytime is a pain in the butt!!!! I got like 3 different trees in that painting
Thread: grain in trees | Forum: Vue
Chip I owe you a couple of favors for this...THANKS (And yes you should charge some money for this LOL)
Been trying for hours to figure this out....
Thread: grain in trees | Forum: Vue
Thanks again Chip....and yes I agree with you....about Aisle FX
I teach a photoreal texture class for the CG society.....and as a teacher myself ...I found Aisle FX REALLY dissapointing.....
Then I found geekatplay and this incredible forum.....(I wish I had my $300 back) LOL
