Snarly, thanks very much for this, it is greatly appreciated.

I can't see anything in this shader that would suggest gamma = 1.0 for the colour map, but it keeps applying it time and time again.
I've been opening up scene files created before the SR4 update and this feature does more harm than good, the way it changes gamma settings seems to be completely arbitrary.
If anyone from Smith Micro reads this, please tell us where the switch is to turn it off! And if there isn't one, what were you thinking?
This has completely screwed up my workflow and needs to be addressed FAST.

OK I've found a fix for this.
In the 'Poser.ini' file the second to last line reads:
MAT_WACROS_ON 1
change it to
MAT_WACROS_ON 0
and it turns off the 'smart' gamma behaviour.
EDIT: or maybe not - I need to figure out if the texture cache remembers the wrong gamma settings or not, or if the 'smart' gamma is hopelessly inconsistent.

Quote - I -and others- have submitted bug reports for this. The default of gamma:1 for a new node is fine; it is not OK to reset image map gamma to 1 after I have specifically set it otherwise.
The behavior isn't consistent. Both of these image maps are similar in hue and brightness (Genetica makes them this way). Both drive diffuse and bump. Poser reset the gamma of one but not the other. So, one appears noticeably brighter.
Every. Time. I Open. The. Scene.
This is exactly what I'm getting too.
I put in a support request to SM detailing the problem and here's their reply:
"Thank you for contacting Support. Gamma Correction is an option in the Render Settings."
Clearly they didn't read my description of the problem properly.

Just a quick note about perspective: changing focal length does not change perspective (only the angle of view), you must move the camera. To get the exaggerated effect you want you must move the camera very close to the subject and use a very wide angle of view (set focal length to 16mm or thereabouts), like you'd do with a real camera.

This reminds me of a former girlfriend. She was German but thought she spoke fluent English; I went along with this because... well, you all know why. Her English was generally pretty good.
But I became helpless with laughter one day when she described a kettle as a 'water cooking machine', which annoyed her considerably, and led to a massive argument. Some time later I went onto Google Translate fully expecting the English word 'kettle' to be something like 'wasserkuchenmaschine' in German, but it isn't: it's 'kessel'.

Use SnarlyGribbly's EZ-Skin
I'm not convinced SSS on eyes is needed for anything other than close-ups

It works fine. You can easily fix the problem with the toddler morph, M4 shoulders with Freak 4 morphs, and more besides. Use Snarly's Scene Fixer to expose relevant scaling dials.

In your render settings configure Auxilliary Render Data to include 'Position'. If you save the render as a .PSD there will be a weird looking colour layer sitting above the main render. View each channel separately and it will be apparent which one is Depth (Z), Height (Y) and Left to Right (X).
I did the atmospheric effects in this image (original below) using combinations of these channels.

The atmosphere shader setting shown, from a small collection I've developed based (of course) on something BagginsBill posted years ago - is one I've called 'mist'; you might want to darken the 'sky' colour of the clouds node to give some differentiation. Note that you can ignore the DepthCue start and end distances because we're not using that, but all my units are in Metres.
The atmosphere strength settings on the light (a spot here) are easy to overdo: 0.025 will give you quite a thick effect, you can drop this to 0.01 or less for a more subtle effect.
NB: do not use the volumetric atmosphere with Infinite Lights! If you need atmosphere for an outside scene, convert an infinite light to a spot, constant attenuation, use angle start / end, distance start / end and intensity to simulate daylight or moonlight.
Set test renders very small because volumetric atmosphere really slows FireFly down...
