Why? Cheap and not cluttered with features. How long? Since Poser 1 (still have the floppies!) but I got dedicated with Poser 4 What do you think? Almost great. Needs a parent company that cares about it like we do. Used for Only for animation.

Spending an hour on a pose is pretty good if you ask me. Look at any great painting and I'm sure that posing the model, sketching the ideas and commiting the paint to canvas took a lot longer. I like using manga poses as a guide. They translate very well into realalistic poses.

BTW explode your mesh faces to "Elements" (not "objects) before exporting and you won't get that crazy smoothing problem that Poser has.

Have you tried a 3ds file instead of an .obj? I haven't got V3 so I can't test it.
