Yeah huge difference between the PUBLISHERS and associated shmucks who've destroyed many gaming studios, and the studios themselves
Troika, Westwood, Bullfrog etc destroyed by the greedy idiocy of the big publishers hwo have them by the balls :/
Vue9 isn't bugged, you don't have it so don't know what yer talking about.
And as much as I LOATHE the Power Elite/crap at the top that's been worsening the USA for last 30 years And us in the UK too)..."Yanks" arne't bad folks (generally very nice and great to get on with, fyi), but scum at the top, lunacy they do vs the Ordinary Joes are two different things.
More pwerful a nation gets, bigger it gets, worse the Power Elite get, inevitable, thing is the Founders knew such risks and tried setting it up as ethically as they could, massive achievement in Human history...but even that couldn't stop the corruption/idiocy from such vast wealth rotting/subverting everything.
Scumbags have no race, creed, colour or country, they care only for themselves.

Render and light settings have HUGE effects on render time/quality
I have some tutorials on such, and see GeekAtPlay for such too, Dax Phandi has excellent turoials on lighting
It's very import when doing SSS to make sure your scene is set at true scale, ie real world scale, heck that's a general rule for all 3D art but especially Vue!
If a glacier is miles long, make the object in Vue miles long, to get it too look right

Thread: dumb question | Forum: Vue
Actually, the RAM of a video card DOES affect Vue or other 3D apps, because it affects how the app displays/stores polygons/textures while you use them on screen in real time!
there is a noticeable BIG difference in ease of use wth Vue when using 512 vs 1gb graphics card, when working with very complex scenes
otherwise you have to start turnign down the display quality with less than 1gb cards
However I think at moment Vue can only use up to 1gb ont he video card, or was tthat a limit only up to Vue8? :)
since Vue doesn't use GPU CPU for rendering (well, sort in Vue9 but it's not an issue), you are as well stciking to low/middle end curent gaming video cards, such as a GT240, they're cheap and 1gb avaliable for about £50 or £60 now? that's what I use

Thread: What to do to reduce time of rendering process? | Forum: Vue
CobraEye
I've got Maxwell renderer (now at verison2) which I use when modelling in Rhino, produces fantastic results as it's unbiased but even with V2 and jsut simple scenes compared ot a forest for exmaple, Maxwell is slooooow just like Vue is ;)
and yeah, holy crap has CPU power improved!! think first Bryce render I did on a Pentium I or II, which is probably not nearly as powerful as some of the mobile phones today, never mind PC CPUs! :P
Volumetric renders could take DAYS, I think one took a week, and that's at 800x600 and none of the fancier stuff we have now.

My tutorial on render tips ;)
note though it's for Vue 7 or was it 8?, Vue9 did change things a bit so may need to do some of your own experiments :)
and my renders, yeah, take at least 2 hours. Well worth it in the end, as if you're making a still image you want glorious quality
http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/tutorials/htm/48.html
Please compare these two images
"Final" render settings, default preset, 4 minute render time
58 minute render, custom settings
HUGE difference in quality. And note, I used a scene which was very slow to render due to being encased in a volumetric material object (a cloud ot give a nebula effect), as longer render times due to this means that testign comparisons are easier to show as all renders are much slower, meaing it's easier to show the difference in time to render
(a small percentage increase/decrease in say a simpel scene rendering in one minute woul reuslt in seconds/fraciton of seconds differenc,e too small to calculue, so you need very slow rendering scenes for comparison tests)
Also, this scene has the wood planking material that shows off the anti-alising well
:)

Thread: Grunge or multiple layers | Forum: Vue
Well for demonstration of this point, here's my freebie "dirt/grunge" material layer for Vue8 and above :)
http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/vue_mats/Steves_Layered_Dirt_V8.zip
it works both procedurally AND with a texture, I put input nodes in for such (you nna blend them), so you can for example, use a UV map to drive specific placement of grunge/dirt, which is how I make ship decks/hulls have staining drippign down them, or in certian areas etc.

You'll be sorry, bud, one day if you do that, I think ;)
your art is a linear progression showing your thoughts, limits of skills, ambitions of scope etc etc. To know where you are going, you have to know where you've been...
I still have my completely noobish pics up, who cares, they were FUN at the time :)
