The scanner I have seems to be the best one for those of us (including myself) who suffer from intermittent cranial vacuum disorder. It's an Agfa Snapscan 1212u. Pretty decent resolution, very easy to use and functional software. Outputs to photoshop well and stuff.

Not sure what scanner you use, but my scanner, and a few others have options in the scanning software for when you are scanning from a magazine that do a fairly good job of removing the moire patterns, even at higher resolutions.

Also you might want to simply invert the transmap for the eyelashes. it looks like black is where white should be and vice versa.

I got my copy of Carrara from buy.com as well, and their price was much cheaper than any of the vendors Metacreations lists. Also I was lucky and happened to get it on a free shipping weekend, and live close enough to one of their warehouses that it was basically like overnight shipping.

I agree with the Rhino tip. It's only NURBS modelling, and not vertex, but it's very powerful for that and easy to use. It does booleans pretty well (I played with booleans a whole bunch before I learned about lofting and rail sweeps and such). Rhino has a 15 use trial version on their site www.rhino3d.com that you might like to check out.
