Thread: P5 System Requirements | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
On a 500Mhz --> acceptable speed
(probably loooooong render times)
on a 333Mhz --> 2/3 acceptable speed
(probably looooooooong render times)
On a 1.7GHz P4 --> great speed :)
Throw in more memory too. 128Mb is too little to enjoy even Poser4. Think 512Mb or more.
Better upgrade to a faster system. If you are on a 333Mhz, other components in your computer will be too slow as well, like e.g. memory to CPU bus speed etc.
Thread: just a simple...almost nonsensical question if you have a sec.... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Art is taking a number of given things and represent these in an original and innovative way. The element of adding unprecedented creativity is important to define art. In a sense, this can be applied to Poser. It is not art because of the tool but because of the result.
How far is purism going? Do true 3D makers reject all pre-made primites, like spheres and cubes too? Do they construct everything by themselves?
Do you think Michelangelo or other great painters, created their own paint? Or sculptors their own marble? or paint people using his own inspiration? They used models, living persons, that posed for them and this concludes the circle :-D

Thread: No OBJ import for P5? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks for the clarification, Kupa!
zstrike, CL is not Microsoft.
I kind of had expected the omission of obj a typo. It probably would have broken backward compatibility of the product.
Thread: Rant: Poser 5, CL, & you | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Poser has been an unique and odd product ever since I used it (my first version was V2 and that was less than complete, least to say :-D). However, this product takes on the complex field of character posing and creation head-on in the 3D industry and is pioneering ( I actually like your comparision with WordPerfect because the resemblance in situation is striking) the interface and handling for this field. It excels in that, but it is far from a solution for all 3D activities and it probably will never be.
I share most of your frustrations but I must acknowledge that this is a very complex material to study. Also it typically creates heavy load for your computer so lockups and slowdowns are expectable (I did not say acceptable, but keep an open mind on the complex task people of CL have taken on them...). You will see this kind of problems on many 3D applications.
I actually think (and hope CL people see the positive reflection rather than threat) Poser needs competition. Expensive tools like 3DS Max should be sold at Poser-like prices, including Character Studio, so a true comparison can start. Competition is the best ground for sensible enrichment of the product.
Finally I highlight one of the comment you made because I think it needs serious reworking (and hope it gets a better treatment in P5): the library subsystem. That one really sucks! What I really want is a project-based approach so it is possible to group everything that makes a Poser project and save this.
Thread: Poser hard to learn? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Would like to comment on the OT but interesting discussion between ScottA and grypho...
Both gentlemen want your son to take the best career decision. It is a merit to them both that they came forward to defend their position.
The critical question is " Do I have the talent?". If yes, go for it. If no, let reality kick in. We all had dreams of becoming an astronaut, a successfull "Indiana Jones" archeologist, a famous sportsman. In the end this ususally is not the outcome.
Make sure that the career decision you make gives you enough money to make a living and that you like the job. After all, most of your life will be spend by doing your profession.
I am an engineer and my job decision was based on economical grounds, because in 1985 Europe had a big recession. I now have enough money to do 3D as a hobby. I sincererly am dubious if I could make the same money as an artist (I am actually very certain:)
Thread: Poser hard to learn? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Poser is primarely a human figure composition tool. With poser you buy the ability to make human figures, dress them, put hair on their heads and props in their hands and then pose them in a certain way. This gives you as result a "tin soldier" that you can export and use in another more mature program such as 3DS Max or Lightwave. Building a human figure is what Poser excels at, not at rendering or animating.
Poser is easy to learn if you stick to this human figure approach. Poser is more difficult if you wish to dig into the more advanced technologies that it covers: file formats, UV-mapping, CR2-editing, Python scripting etc.
Another often overlooked difference between Poser and other 3D modelling tools is that poser does not implement a true XYZ-world as e.g. 3DS Max. The approach of Poser is a bone-figure-relative-addressing method. This means that movements of the bones of the figure are dictated by relative position of a master-bone (slave-master as in a hierarchy). This can give odd results when trying to set-up a complex scene with many props. That is for me a big reason to split activites in Poser and other 3D applications based on my previously mentioned "tin soldier" approach.
Hope this makes sense...
BTW, did you known that Maya is used by ILM for Star wars II ?
