Here's a good MUST-DO list:
Always try to have your characters posing in front of a ruined temple or other fantasy prop. This seems to be the most popular genre here, so you're image should get plenty of views.
Always use a pre-made pose. Don't worry about things like skin poking through the clothing or feet hovering above the floor- these are too complicated to fix anyway.
Always make nude images. Sure, people like seeing nude images, but this helps you avoid the issue of clothing: you don't need to learn how to conform clothing and you don't need to learn how to avoid possible poke-through.
Always have your characters stare blankly into space with a blank expression. It's very rare that real people actually look at an object in space and it's even rarer that they have an expression on their face.
Just look at any runway model and you'll see what I mean- those women never have an expression on their faces!
If you follow rule #3 and always make nude images, no one will be looking at your character's face or eyes anyway. ;)
If you use a background image, it's not necessary to adjust the lighting so your models match the background. Poser's default gray/ orange/ white set is usually good enough.
Don't try to make your own character by adjusting the morphs or mixing textures. This is too complicated. Besides, people enjoy seeing the same texture set used over and over and over again.
If you do your post-work in Photoshop, remember to follow these steps:
a) Export the image from Poser as a TIFF.
b) Open the TIFF in Paint Shop Pro and convert it to png, making sure to keep the format "lossless".
c) Open the png in Corel Painter and convert to BMP.
d) Open the BMP in Photoshop. If this doesn't work, open the TIFF file.
Remember, it's common knowledge that Poser 3 can't actually export the image as a Photoshop file. This is a feature Curious Labs will be adding to Poser 4.
And the most important MUST-DO: never, ever look at other people's images. Don't talk to them about their technique and how they made their image. Don't try to learn from other people.
Never try to improve your own work. Never experiment and never try something new.

Thread: has anyone sold their art at www.cafepress.com? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I've used cafepress for a number of years, but Conniekat8 is right- you have to bring your own audience. In my case, I promote the fact that my artwork is available as framed prints from my website.
I've even sold a few items. :)

Let me ask this: did you purchase the model? Did you render it from a few angles and with a few light sets to see what it looks like? Or are you basing your complaint on a few sales images?
If you can make a better model, then please feel free.
After all, it's easy to post a complaint about a model that you may not have even purchased and are only judgng by the sales images. It's much more difficult to actually prove your expertise by building an exact replica. And if you are building an exact replica, don't forget the opening doors and interior. And keep the polygon count reasonable enough so the model can be used in Poser. And map the model nicely so users can change the color to reflect the seasons.

Hey! My site isn't that old. Oh, wait, it was created April 2000... I guess it is old. :)
I still have all the original files, including free textures and poses for the P4 characters and I try to update the pages as often as I make new stuff.

Thread: JHoaglands Mat Pose Creator | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Replied to jjroland's site IM on the 11th.
The program was designed for use with Poser 4 and can create Poser 5 style MAT poses. It does not include any advanced material features such as procedural nodes, displacement, ray-traced reflections, etc.
Yes, the program can create MAT poses for props, but due to Poser's feature/ glitch, MAT poses will only work on PARENTED props. MAT poses do not work on non-parented props.

Thread: Can I upload my Star Wars-branded items now? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Actually, you're missing the point. It doesn't matter if I (or anyone else) has full permission from Lucas to sell or make models or redistribute them.
The point is that Renderosity has a policy that says they don't allow free items with copyrighted names, irregardless of any kind of "permission". This is the policy set by Renderosity and the policies on other sites are completely irrevelant.
Yet, after they deleted my items because of this issue, they're now allowing items with copyrighted names?
Why the change in policy?
P.S. dadt is correct- there is a Klingon Uniform on the first page of the Free Stuff section... something that I always though was againt the policy because of the word "Klingon". However, if this item is allowed, I expect people to upload their Klingon starships, and of course, the Enterprise itself.

Okay, so it seems that animation freebies are exempt from the "no copyrighted names allowed" policy. But, I'd still prefer to hear an official statement from an admin about this.
Here are some better examples:
So, I'll re-phrase the question: given that these items are so easy to find, has the "no copyrighted names" policy been revoked? Can I start uploading Star Wars items with their proper name?

Thread: OT: I`ve been accepted into the Jacksonville Beach Art Festival | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thread: OT: I`ve been accepted into the Jacksonville Beach Art Festival | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The show was held on Saturday, Oct 20th and Sunday, Oct 21st from 10:00am to 5:00pm at Jacksonville Beach. The booths were set up in Latham Plaza, which is a 1.5-block wide open space between City Hall and the beach.
The art festival website said there were spaces for 170 artists and I later found out that about 60 artists were attending.
I counted the number of booths on Saturday and the total came to about 50: there were roughly 45 artist booths, 2 food booths, 1 "window darkening" booth (why were they at an art festival? I don't know), and 1 double-booth by a teeth-whitening company (again, why were they at an art festival?).
There were a lot of empty spaces, including the space next to mine.
(As an aside, the event organizers had poor communication: I never actually received a welcome packet letting me know that I was accepted. I found out when I checked the website where I had submitted the application and then called the art festival organizers. I'm wondering if this happened to a lot of other artists: they never received their packet, so they never knew they had been accepted.)
Saturday was bright and sunny... I think I may have even gotten a sunburn! My artwork included four 24x36 inch prints (including the "Tabby Portrait 3", which was displayed at the Otronicon show), a good number of 13x16 and 15x19 framed and matted prints, and about ten 8.5x11 framed pieces.
And, yes, all of the artwork for sale was of Tabby.
As people walked by my booth, they made comments about how unique my artwork was. In fact, a number of them commented on the "Potrait With a Ladybug" image- the one that I almost made as a joke. ;)
Some people asked what programs I used, but most people were only interested in the fact that my images were digital. I tried to gauge how computer-literate they were: when some teenage girls came by, I explained that I used a 3d model and rendered the image. Some them even said my artwork reminded them of anime artwork!
But when some older people came by, I changed my description slighty and I simply said that I used computer software to make the artwork. I think my talk of "Poser" and "Lightwave" and "rendering" would have bored them as if a painter told me about his "red #10 paint" or "sable fine brush". ;)
The visitor attendance was extremely low. By the end of the day, not many people had stopped to look at my booth and I hadn't sold anything. I talked to some of the other artists (including ones who exhibit at art festivals almost full-time) and they said the show was fairly dead compared to other shows. Most of them weren't selling anything either, except for some smaller pieces.
The weather on Sunday wasn't as good: it was very windy in the morning and started raining. I had a hard time getting set up since the wind kept blowing my larger images over! I also had to get a little more creative with my display and keep all my artwork inside the booth so nothing would get rained on.
As the day went on, it drizzled off-and-on almost the entire day... finally clearing up in the late afternoon.
Around 1:30, a lady came by and spent about half an hour looking through my artwork. She also purchased the "In Blue Portrait" as a 8.5x11 framed image. She also said that my Tabby character looked very similar to her daughter, who had passed away a number of years ago due to cancer.
Unfortunately, I was getting lunch at the time and my Dad was the one who actually talked to her!
That was the end of the excitement for the day though- a few people walked by, but the show was basically done by 3:30pm. In fact, a number of artists gave in and started packing up between 4:00 and 4:15.
In the end, it was definitely a learning experience. Will I do more shows? Definitely. Will I do another show in Jacksonville with this company? Probably not.
(This image shows my booth as it looked on Saturday.)

Thread: Poser Pro 7..ETA? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Let's accept the answer of "It'll be released when it's done". ;)
I probably don't have to remind everyone of the Poser 5 mess where the Poser world screamed so loudly for Poser 5 that Curious Labs was practically forced to release a version that seemed to be just out of the beta stage.
(Everyone complained that they wanted the software now, even though it was buggy, then everyone complained about the bugs, then everyone complained about how they though CL was using them as public beta testers.)
Let's give e-frontier the time to finish and polish Poser Pro. :)

Thread: Star Trek Voyager Bridge... | Forum: Freestuff
The bridge details are wrong:
Voyager has two chairs against the railing: one for the captain and one for the first officer.
There is only one chair in the front section, and it's behind the helm console. The Enterprise D and E had the "split chairs" for helm and ops- Voyager (and the NX-01 Enterprise) only have one center chair.
Here's a diagram from Ex Astris Scientia.
Here's the page on which it's found: Starship Bridges.
Here's a Google search for photos of Voyager's Bridge.
Some screen shots from the Elite Force video game, which are actually pretty good considering the low poly-count models used in the game.
