Thread: Poser files in DAZ 3D | Forum: DAZ|Studio
TigerDad, in "3D since CADKEY" - now I can relate to that. I made the shift from CAD several years ago.
A couple of things that may be helpful for the transition to Scene & Figure modeling. First, "organic" based models and figures like those in Poser and DAZ are developed with a different moddeling system than CAD to allow for skin distortion effects and posing adjustments in soft-sided objects, plants & animal figures. This is called Sub-Division modeling. Poser & DAZ prefer quad poly mesh, that is sub-dividedable to increase polygon density in bend zones. Game engines and other renderings systems prefer triangles. Modeling tools allow for conversion and changes in mesh density resolution.
A Poser / DAZ figure is a posable, animatable single mesh object, or a organized grouping of mesh objects. Some mesh groupings may be permently attahed to the others via "weld" wihich is in effect a grouping of joining polygons that is defined as the seam between other groupings. KEY: Poser & DAZ figures maintains count of the polygon VERTICIES in a weld seam to allow other/or the same but morphed polygon groupings to be swapped. This is how Poser & DAZ apply new morphs to an existing mesh. For instance a figure's head may be exported to a modeling system, have its features adjusted and if the joining seam verticie count remains the same with the original may be exoprted and reattached to the body in the rendering system (Poser or DAZ).
DAZ Hexagon, Wings 3D and Blender are nice free modeling systems. Pixeologic Z-Brush (600) and Sculptris (free) are my preferred modelers.
Adding color and texture to vertices (vertex painting) and surfaces (texture mapping). Texture mapping is the addition of image layers (.jpg or PNG) to the surface of the model. In a OBJ Model, the associated .MTL file identifies how texture maps are applied to polygon groups. The polygon groups are groups are defined by the modeler to also organize the vertices so that regions of the surface of the model can be defined so appropriate the texture, and orientation can be applied. For instance use a text editor to open and edit a .mtl file if you want to see which image is applied to what area of a given model.
RE: Poser and DAZ, both are great I ue them both. DAZ and Poser users distinguish figures from characters. As I understand it "Characters" or character models are a varient of a production figure. Like how DAZ "David" is based on the "Michael" figure. What is sold or downloaded that is not directly compatable, can be adjusted/tweaked or modded to work. This includes Genisis, Just takes some creative thinking and approaches to work around the limitations. And there are always limfacs, however almost anything can be accomplished, usually with a free tool. Do continue to share and ask in these and other boards. and Welcome to the wonderfull hobby of figure modeling, rendering and animation!
Finally, If you plan to publish, note licensing requirements of the content vendors. I like to make indy/hobby games and 3D virtual scenes in HTML5 for my websites therefore must take licensing limitations into consideration before purchase. Some vendors like DAZ, and 3D Universe do offer very competitive indy game licenses for thier content that makes this very practical.
Cheers!
Thread: What are the hidden costs / fees for the "free" version of D|S 4.0? | Forum: DAZ|Studio

Yes, DAZ refunded Customers who felt burned by the DS4 devaluation. When I querried about the price drop, DAZ Customer Service refunded my out of pocket cost and follow up later to be certain I was fully satisfied. I was astonished actually, as its rare that you see that level of service much anymore.Regarding cost of his hobby, some of the DAZ Platinum Club (discount club) users discussing the recent program benifit changes were questioning value. DAZ PC is still appears to provide some of the best value. I assembled the program benifits and published this comparative list with the competition so you can evaluate which are most relevant to you.

RE DS Hidden costs, thats depends on wether you have an addictive personality. In the sense if you may make impulsive purchasing decisions. However, from the nature of your question I suspect this in not a problem in your case. I think you will find it a woderful vaue all costs considered.
FYI Wings3D and Blender.org are two other great modeling and rendering apps that are free and extremely worthwhile.

Animate+ (http://www.gofigure3d.com/site/) also has several V4 animation packs that are Poser compatable.

MonkyCloud, there are many exciting and fun ways to implement your Poser figures and 3D props in games, wether its 2, 2.5 or 3D. While I used decimated (polygon reduction) Poser figures to import into a 3D rendering game engine, there are many other options. For instance using SM Anime Studio you can imporrt your Poser 3D figures and create 2D, Toon Like aimatuions in Flash. These can easily be rendered as animated, semi-realistic 2.5 (Bas-Relif) or Toon sketchings. Then using game engine technologies like Paper Vision, Unity, Away3D or Blitz3D you can assemble the results into a functional game. The options are limitless.I appreciate the feedback.WIth respect to HTML5 Game compatablity. Improvements coming. The game does rely on WebGL for 3D video acceleration. One nice thing about WebGL is that you just need the latest version of browser to support it, however these are now more ubiquitious than Flash plug-in (today). There is a flash version of the game on the FarmPeeps site, but it needs flash stage 3 plug-in for GPU acceleration. Even then, I think the flash version is slower than WebGL.
This chart shows the prevalence of WebGL compatible browsers: http://caniuse.com/webgl
For native IE compatibility I need to add the following work around to convert the CANVAS to an Object to enable WebGL.

How about rendering something up for Mothers Day. How about a garden, pasture or picnic scene to make a card for the Mothers in your life. Attached is a link pasture sunny skybox backdrop to get you started. Also remember nmost tools allow you to export as flash or animated GIF, so you can make a home made E-Card too!

Thread: Can I add to the front end of my animation? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Just noticed release of SR2 patch today and it has these promising fixes :)
Animation
• Corrected preview of animation resulting from constraint channel relationship, after reloading scene
• Enabled undo for deletion of constraints
• Corrected start and end frame handling for animation layers
• Enabled undo for modifications to animated joint centers
• Improved key frame copying performance.
• Selecting top row in Animation palette now selects entire figure again
