Thread: What "rules" do you shoot by? | Forum: Photography

Thanks for your responses: all of this is interesting to me on a number of levels. Above is an link to a related discussion at another site. It kinda triggered this question for me, and I wondered how we come to call these uh, principles "rules" instead of guidelines. Actually I wonder greatly at what we do, in general :D.Thread: Palindrome | Forum: Photography
Alpha-Digital Velvia is one of Fred Miranda's actions. It's supposed to make digital pix look they were shot on Velvia, without driving up the noise. I think the web site is www.fredmiranda.com. Michelle-Thanks! :D.

I prefer the first one. The lower right is bright, but it doesn't bother me much, and the spot on the cheek does not bother me at all. I agree that the frame is bit top on the top, and that it would be nice if she/he was looking into the frame a bit more...but this has a wonderful graphic feeling, and as it is, the negative space is pretty interesting. I prefer it over the second one because I find the crop right through the ear disturbing. The third is a nice image, but I keep waiting for him/her to speak--what will she/he say?

Bsteph-- I like the pix--maybe the bottles shot is the one I like best. I have two questions: First, did you use any sort of camera support? Monopod even? Because in low light situations, you may end up with slow shutters, and camera shake can destroy an otherwise wonderful shot. I hate using a tripod myself; well actually I just hate carrying it--and then with ALL THAT GLASS around--yikes! LOL Second: can you set the ISO on your camera?

Oh, for a second there, I thought you were engaging in the time-honored practice of "tree-tipping" !

I'm with Punkclown, I like the midnight filtered version best; it has just the right kind of softness.

Was he singing just before it happened ?< Nah. I think his uncle got thrown, and was about to get trampled, so LL distracted the bull and got stomped himself. So, he's sort of a hero. AND he can sing like crazy, which is good, because well, oh just because...

Michelle rocks. Don't be pickin' on her. Did you hear that Lyle Lovett got trampled by a bull last week? Sorry, no good TX pix to share, right now!

Misha A hot mirror is a little piece of colored glass that goes in front of the "film" plane, inside the camera, that basically filters out red light. I believe its goal is to improve focus, since all wavelengths focus at slightly different lengths. But if you have a hot mirror which takes out (at least) long red wavelengths, and then you add to the front of your lens a filter which takes out everything but red light, then there is really not much of the spectrum left to expose the film or sensor, (potentially none, actually :-D). So you get long exposures, and all the problems that go with long exposures.

Tsk, tsk. I'm putting a mark in the book Jordy, because you didn't answer the question of the monos. In answer to YOUR question, it is an extraordinarily safe neighborhood. With a couple of enforcers (terminators, even) like Alpha and myself around, nevermind my vicious dog, no one would dare mess with a car :D. Is anyone buying any of this?
