You know, after seeing this ugly little drama play out more than once, I do not understand why formula writers make their formulae so readily available if they are going to have a cow every time someone uses it--wittingly or unwittingly. For crying out loud, if you are that proprietary about your parameters and formulas, keep them under lock and key and only take them out during a full moon, armed with a machete. I, too, have seen a few people run off from this place and others, because some bullies didn't have the class to question them privately about the images they--innocently-- posted. One woman swore off fractal art forever because of it; mortified by the response to her image, this newcomer to fractal art ran shrieking into the night because of a bullying job similar to this one. It's an ugly little tradition that I suspect many of us are tired of witnessing. I know I am. MindyThread: Fractal Progs? | Forum: Fractals

I like Stephen Ferguson's programs the best......and I think for a beginner, they are the most user friendly. Ultra Fractal may scare you to death if you're just starting out. But in my humble opinion, if you're into vibrating color, nobody can touch VChira or Tierazon. Both are free, and both require no install. You can download them here: VChira http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/vchira/index.html Tierazon http://home.houston.rr.com/fergusonsc/Tierazon-v29/index.html Here is a link to my gallery, where you can see these programs in "action", so to speak. ;) www.peapoddesign.net/gallery

There are a few ways to make really good clouds. What I find myself using a lot, besides Flaming Pear's Glitterato, is the Sky Effects filter in KPT 6. Also, ULead has a nice little plug in called Particle which makes very nice clouds, as well. And finally, Photoshop has an innate filter which also works well. I hope this helped.

What amazes me is that this is even a topic that is up for discussion. To me, that's like asking a photographer if he thinks it's wise to tweak his work as he develops in the darkroom, or a musician if his music is pure because he used a synthesizer. Of course you wouldn't, but some people in this community still think if you post process your images you're going straight to hell. It shouldn't even be a question, if fractal art is indeed *an* art and not just a panoply of formulae. Mathemeticians do not artists make.Art is either good or bad. Whether you post process your images until they look like a pile of crap or you can't crop a pure fractal image to save your life, the end result is generica at best, and garbage at worst. If you don't have an artist's eye you're going to create crap, whether you use filters or not.
I always giggle when someone posts a UF image and says, "ninety two layers, no post processing!" as if not post processing a fractal is some kind of great achievement and all that layering didn't constitute post processing.
I only hope that when burgeoning fractal artists find these fractal web communities, they aren't intimidated or affected by these absurd judgements. What a shame that would be.

Thank you so much, Jock. You are a sweetie. :) Hey, Tom! Have we met? Sounds like we had some previous interaction that I don't recall. :) But it's good to see you, too. You do some nice fracky work. I did check out Estevez, very talented as well, and seems to be quite a fan of yours. ;) Mindy
