The luminance channel does give the exact greyscale values.
But for print you face the problem of having four or more coloured inks.
I personally prefer duotone (or even tritone) with a black and a near grey (a tiny bit blueish or brownish)

Thread: TFT v CRT Monitors | Forum: Photography
The one that's well calibrated.
And causes less eyestrain.
CRT's, good ones, were quite expensive a few years back. It's obvious that they cannot be replaced by a cheap tft. TTft's are still evolving, however there are already some quite good tft's now, with impressive blacks and dark greys. But these are more expensive.
Colour fidelity is only really valuable for print. If colour fidelity is wanted when you print. In offset, this is a must. In home printing it is your choice to get a profile for your printer and hardware calibration for your monitor.
If you're happy, then it's all right. If not, do something about it.

Thread: dirt or damage? | Forum: Photography
My bad. I cleaned the mirror but not the sensor. I looked in the manual for "cleaning" but found nothing. Then, looking for how to open the mirror, I found "Sensor cleaning". Despite the fact that I ddidn't see anything, it looks like it's gone.
Quite a relief!

Thread: Possibly dumb Apollo Maximus 2007 skin texture question | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Is it possible to use skins and characters from the original Apollo on A2007? I missed the original one, and there are some characters I really would love to acquire...

Thread: Who is the best v3 character | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The best characters are the ones that fit into your creation. Sometimes it's one you created yourself, sometimes it's a created one, and sometimes you tweak a created one to your fancy. Or use a different skin.

Thread: Need a more precise way to change colors | Forum: Photoshop
1/ Blow the image up untill you see the pixels and choose with the eyedropper a yellow that is typical for the yellow tissue. I got 246-216-37.
2/ create a new layer and fill it (alt-del on pc) with this colour
3/ set its blend mode to color. That way you change hue and saturation of the green below to match the yellow.
4/ copy this layer for the next step. and have this one activated.
5/the texture is too coarse. Go to channels and click them one by one. The blue (as expected) is way dark. Copy it, the Ctrl click on it to load as a mask. Invert the mask.
6/ set this blend mode to change the lightness of the pic by choosing luminosity blend mode.
feel free to tweak the mask a bit if needed.
as said: not exact, but it shows a possible way to take

Thread: V4 eyes driving me slowly bats... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
V4 eyes are a nuisance. And your renders do not convince me otherwise.
Some of the main problems:
1/ No shadow from lashes or upper eyelids
2/ The eyes tend to pop out like as if she were suffering from hyperthyroid
3/ The eyewhites look more like eggshells. No wet look can change that.

Thread: strange goings on (just don't panic!!!) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
There are thousands and thousands of images here at R. Now either you download what you like and end up with a few DVD's, or you keep thousands of favourite links in your browser.
A third option is to use R. to create your personal "gallery" of works you like. What's the problem?
Paranoia. That's how you spell it.

Thread: Switching runtimes | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Poser was initially not meant to be used like it is now. It was more like Goo etc.: fun for kids.
I agree with you on the interface, but when you read here how people don't like anything to change (the forum, the site) then you know how the poser developers are stuck.
I want multiple undo, I want fully separate cameras and lights (not having to switch to adjust a camera and then switch back to that finger or eye, I want a search that stops when I click "no, dont continue", I want bum files to be ignored in the search, I want better joints, I want a separate folder for morphs and characters outside the pose folder,...but the developers have to take into account that most people will want backwards compatability...and prefer things not to change. They want that new sportscar, but it has to have the look and feel of their old bike.
This said: in most cases, subfolders are much handier than separate runtimes.
Just like using the material room to get your materials is perhaps a bit slower, but a ot handier when it comes to organisiation that pose files. Many (older ones) still include bum files, adress a wrong bump or (recent ones) simply have bump not attached to anything.
And: if you want to rename a runtime, it will not be recognised. You have to put it inside a folder called "old stuff", but the names runtime and its subfolders must be kept.
As an aside: Gongyla came home yesterday with a second hand book: New territories, the computer art of Jurgen Ziewe. They were made some ten years ago with KPT Bryce, FractalDesign Poser, Mandelzot 2, Strata studio pro, and this on a mac 8100 with 140MB ram and a 120MHz processor....
At the time, I didn't even have a puter and wasn't interested in one.
Today we drown in the sheer numbers of apps one "needs" and the puter one "needs" to be able to use them. But when I see what mr Ziewe achieved, naive as it may look today, I can only say: hats off! and stop whining.

Thread: Looking for a young morph for V3 or SP3 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
There is also a V3 character called "Niko". We have it here; but I didn't download it so I can't help you. I do know it was free and it looks like a skinny twelve-thirteen year old: long legs, arms, out of proportion.
I can also tell you that it either came from faeriewylde (forums?), Rosity, RDNA or Poserpros. I guess it was the first.
edit:
wrong! I did a google search and got this:
http://poserpros.daz3d.com/store/viewitem.php?selitem=1536
$2.95
you may also want to check the Peaches" character, also by faerieguild. same price.

Thread: Hesitating to buy model if there is a RTEncoder involved? (mini poll) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
There are Poser tutorials here at R. Get an encoder tut on there, with a very clear why it has to be used, and a step by step example of how to do it. Provide link etc, and every vendor can refer to that tut.
That's the function of the tutorials section here. Not endless ways to hide limits of the renderer (app and person) by doing postwork.

Thread: Public Apology to All of My Favorite Artists | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well, same problem here. we have several folders in our favourites, folders with images, fav artists, threads, market stuff etc. They have become useless.
They had one advantage: in the ol' days, people had names. Now they're a number. No way to know which is who's when looking at a link.
When visiting the galleries, you first hae to click that small text link top-right, then, at the bottom, to see on which page you are, you have to look for that number that is not underlined.
Lots of stats, but who's interested in thaese escept for someone graduating at university on the behaviour of visitors of Renderosity?
Lots of e-mail notifications of people having uploaded. Hell, when I/we visit, we're well capable of browsing our R. favourite artisits. And this is really ike spam. Yes. I can turn it off. For each one of them. I have to do the work.
Well, I just don't know anymore. I always liked the community, even the occasional troll was never a real, bad guy, but I guess I'll be looking for an alternative. The quality in the MP has gone down, some interesting vendors left...
Really: for us this is a drawback, butI cannot imagine any serious company wanting Bondware to design and code their sites.
Rosity: it's high time you do something about it! Your sources of income are unhappy and talking about divorce!

Thread: Transferring Body Morphs to Clothing | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
WardrobeWizard is really great. And very easy to use. Load the cloth and the original figure, zero (included!) and let WW calculate. Then load the morphed (or other) character/figure, zero it and have it calculated. There are even warning messages when you do something wrong.
Sometimes, when poses are rather extreme, the cloth mesh will not exactly follow the body anymore as the bodymesh is deformed due to posing. This has nothing to do with WW. In this case, magnets can be used.
