The look of a base figure is largely irrelevant.....it is simply a "functional base". How good that base is, is determined by how good looking of characters that products makers can make of that base. I have tried a large number of the bases out there to see what they can do, and many are not easy to work with. The success of a figure is not so much the base itself...but how much support it gets, so it has to be functional and easy to work with.

So, you don't think all these DAZ vendors who want to see Poser made into DS2.0 so THEY can sell more Genesis items while cutting the throat of La Femme and Dawn and PE is negative? Somehow, I do.
What the hell do we NEED Poser for if it's just going to be DS2.0?
Gotta be honest, not all DAZ vendors wanna see poser made into d/s....that is what d/s is for. While I have no use for poser anymore, it was a big part of my growth as a vendor, and I am very interested to see how it grows. But I can see how alot of poser users might be interested in being able to use genesis items, so it is up to the new owners to decide how inclusive they want to be with it all. A big part of rosities market is for d/s products now, so for them alone it would be a benefit.

Gate...your logic hurts my brain. There is no "Free Publicity" if people are stealing your product and giving it away...that is all pure loss. No matter how you try to turn that around it will never be anything good. Good luck with your products...you can market them how you see fit. But for me....I am glad to have mine marketed to actual customers who actually respect the product and the people making them.

Thing is...while it is great to have theories as to what you think is or is not a good idea, DAZ has the experience. They have been playing this market for a long time, they are the most successful of the sites, and they are the only site that is actively bringing in new customers. They really do know what works and what doesnt to grow the market.
I have not always agreed with their decisions either, and have had more than a few debates over their plans. But in the end I cannot argue with their results. I have been with them for a long time, I have personally met with the old management and with the new, and can tell you that the new management really has a strong vision for growth, and professionals with real world experience guiding their decisions. They can see beyond just this community and into newer and exciting markets all as avenues for growth. So while our opinions on this or that may occasionally differ, they do have the skill to know what is what and what the communities require for growth.
....and I can tell ya.....dealing with pirates is not a way to grow ones name or reputation. Reputations are made by creating quality products, and marketing them to customers who appreciate them. If as you say, pirates simply download and never use the products, there is obviously no appreciation, and no customer......and do you really think they care about who made the product?...come on...of course not.
So Daz's plan to market to an active and growing customer base really does make alot more sense.

Piracy is not marketing. Marketing encourages people to go and buy products....Piracy gives the stolen work away. Marketing is directed by the product creator who has control over which market it hits.....Piracy gives stolen work to people who dont want to buy. People who steal the products and share the products are not respecting anyone
DAZ works hard to protect their PA's because they respect the hard work that we put into our products. Customers respect PA's by continuing to purchase the products we make. PA's respect their customers by continuing to sell their products at very reasonable prices, and ensure that the customer always gets the best quality work that they can put out. THAT is a healthy work cycle.
And for the record.....The PA rouster at DAZ is growing not shrinking..the customer market at daz is growing not shrinking (as I jumped yet another tax bracket with this income tax filing). The whole industry is getting stronger...and PA's feel safer knowing the site they sell at has their back and is working hard for both protecting them and growing their sales.

_So a person could take Pauline's .obj and start over completely if they wanted to, like she's just a base mesh? They could use the topology that's already present, since it's actually pretty good, and sculpt her in zbrush or whatever, and turn her into a totally new figure that they then UV if they like and rig to their satisfaction, and then sell her as their own creation, that doesn't even require Pauline or Poser 11?
That doesn't seem like that a bad a deal at all, if that's the case._
It's a terrible idea from a vendors perspective. So tell me, why should vendors support your Pauline over the SM version or somebody elses? Do you see the problem here? There are going to be so many once off versions that will never gain traction or support. You are seriously going to fragment the userbase. What good is 100 versions of Pauline if none of them are compatible with each other? I do not see the benefit of this at all. Please for the love of God, stay away from this idea. It is going to cause mass confusion.
because that one could be bought without having to buy poser11...will have a bigger market

How does this "Merchant Resource" idea work? If someone mod's the figure and puts it for sale in the marketplace here or wherever, then wouldnt people essentially be able to buy the figure without buying poser? I thought one of the perks of buying the new poser version was to get the new figure.

One point of clarification. Zev 0 is NOT a Daz Representative. He does not speak for Daz 3d. This does not mean his statements were incorrect, just that we want to be very clear that he speaks for himself. and not Daz 3d as a company.

You had an actual DAZ representative in here telling you directly that that DSON was open source...not sure how much more clear that could have been. Yet there are still people arguing about the legality of it. It is like they really do not want it to be free and available for use. Very weird.
I was not talking about Zevo.....I was talking about Bruce LOL I would never think Zev0 would be talking for anyone but himself

Look...lets face facts, the native poser figures all really suck. Poser figures have always been sub-par, because as was pointed out, poser is a software company, not a content company. They really dont care about content. But the problem with that thinking is without content, what is poser really good for? Throwing in a new render engine will not bring more life into the program, specially if all the content that is available has been designed for the old one anyway. New life comes from new figures, and even the SM reps say that Pauline was released unfinished. So they really don't care...and as such why should product makers care? Content is the lifeblood of the program. Without it, you got nothing.

PA's are concerned in the simple reasoning that they like to keep watch over the whole of the market so that they know what is or isn't relevant. This way we can continue to bring the most fully featured products that we can. Why some seem intent to wanna portray PA's as being against poser, I don't know. The exact opposite is true. Many of us started in poser, and would like to see poser become a viable market again. Do we NEED the poser market to survive?...not at all, but that doesnt mean we dont like it. The market has strongly shifted to D/S, because Daz has made some really wise decisions...and we would like to see poser do the same. Because we actually care...simple as that.

Hello Zev0, on your agenda again? Or on the hunt this time? STOP writing this CRAP in a POSER forum.
The ONLY company that can legally write a Plug-in is DAZ.
But they are too high on their island to do that.

Thread: Creating companion files for materials for Poser from DAZ Studio... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I always found it better to set up poser materials in poser, and d/s ones in daz....the transfers never work good enough for my liking.

When designing characters it is important to use the right tools for the right job. HD morphs are great, they can add alot of details. But they are wasted for things like fine bumps and skin and small wrinkles. For that the right tools are bump/displacement/normal maps. Those types of details should not be modeled into the figure. It will not add any realism to the render to have them modeled. Those are skin details which are part of the skin texture.
The new capacities for HD morphs are exciting in what they can add to a character, but like all things, they should be used wisely, where they have the proper impact.

Slowing down figure generation iterations means to not keep up with emerging technology....that is the problem that is killing poser. Daz is smarter than that...they will keep growing new figures that keep up with modern technology, and as such will keep themselves vital
