I ran into the same problem installing Poser 8, but what probably caused my problem was that I didn't have the Poser 8 content or the legacy content downloaded yet, and I did a custom installation with just the Poser 8 content selected.
I solved it by reinstalling again with the compact installation feature (I never use the base Poser content anyway). That seemed to do the trick for me at least. I don't know if it'll help anyone else though.

then again, i read somewhere when the u.s. detonated the first atom bomb, theory held that it could produce a much less limited chain reaction that could kill us all. they did it anyway :
i remember reading something about that. I think it was something like there was an incredibly remote possibility that the atom bomb could ignite the entire atmosphere or something like that. That was a few years ago so my memory is pretty hazy on that.

Here's another one that might be related to the crashing issue: strange artifacts appearing in the preview screen when its in OpenGL mode. What I mean by strange artifacts is things like vertical and/or horizontal bars showing any open windows behind the Poser window, or the desktop.
So far, so good, I haven't tinkered with anything since the last re-install and things seem to be working alright. Although there is another Windows update waiting to be installed; will have to wait and see after that.

Quote - I opened up the Nvidia Control Panel and under Manage 3D Settings I added Poser to the list. I didn't change anything, just left it all at default settings. Now Poser 7 is stable. I can also now use the open GL. Everything working great. Sharen
I wonder if that's what I did wrong, before I re-installed the drivers. I did the same thing but then I decided to get creative and tweak some settings :D And so I still had some problems and I just thought that the driver-batch was faulty. But on the second re-install, everything seems to work fine.
Gets rather irritating when you start working on something—haven't even gotten to the rendering part—and then it just crashes on you. I think I wanted to punch the computer after about the fifth time (in a row) that happened.

Quote - ArdathkSheyna, your a thread troll when you come into a thread with the intentions of crashing a topic with comments like this, I think you need to read the TOS again before you go and get yourself banned.
Whoa, whoa...now you're the one who's out of line. I think calling me a thread-troll is pretty harsh and threatening me with banning is way out of line. That is up to the mods.
I stated my opinion. What's wrong with that? Personally, I was done with the thread after my second post because I found other things that needed to be worked on. Now I come back here and you're personally attacking me. Now, I'm sorry if anything I said offended you but you've gotta learn not to take things so seriously.

Quote - I'll start up Poser 7, load a figure...and then mouse over the figure, and Poser dissappears.
Been having that same problem as well. I also have an nVidia card (Geforce 7300GS). Its something with the most recent nVidia releases—175. I downgraded to an earlier release (93), and the problem seemed to stop but I ended up going back to 175 because the gamma, contrast and brightness settings were all off, and no amount of readjusting seemed to help.
Now, seeing that people who have Poser 7 are having this problem, its not a Poser Pro problem; which is what I thought at first.
Now, whats weird is that since re-installing the recent update, I don't seem to have the problem anymore. Keeping my fingers crossed, though.
Thread: Quick question about poser crashes | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Don't know if this helps, but are you using OpenGL or Sree for preview mode? And do you have an nVidia graphics card, specifically GeForce? I'm asking because I recently encountered a problem that involved Poser Pro and one of the dlls that are apart of the nVidia driver install—nvogl32.dll. And, yeah, I'm running the most recent driver update from nVidia.
Anyway, I'd try to switching to Sree and see if that helps. I'm running XP x64 and you're using Vista so I don't know how much help this next bit is going to be, but try getting into Event Viewer after Poser crashes and see if there's any other modules that might be causing Poser to crash. That was how I found out about the problem with nvogl32.dll, btw.
Sorry, I can't be of much help otherwise :(

Quote - Seems the "end of the world" is gonna happen on Dec. 21st, 2012 -- which just happens to be my birthday. Talk about celebrating it with a bang!
LOL! Now that's a humorous way of looking at it ;-)
I've heard so many end-times prophecies, theories, scenarios, etc, etc, etc. while growing up that I'm more than tired of hearing it. Not to mention the fifteen-gazillion different dates for the "end." First, it was December 21st, 1999, then it was June 6th, 2006 and now its 2012. Eh, there was even an "end-times" ministry right down the street from me shudders
Eh, I guess people are just crazy at times...must be something in the water :tt2:
Thread: 2012 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
And what does this have to do with Poser, exactly? Not that I have a problem with off-topic threads—when they're marked clearly as being OT :tongue2:
btw, I hate end-times "prophecies", predictions and that other crap; and I really don't like the mental defectives who like to spread them.

Quote - Thank you, ArdathkSheyna.
I am using POSER 7E v7.0.4.220.
No prob!
That's SR1 alright, so maybe they haven't corrected that bug then. Every time I had the problem, though, it was always the first render I did after loading Poser; it would never occur after that. Because it always occurred on the first render, though, I never gave it much thought. I just stopped the render, then started it again. I just noticed that it stopped after I got the SR1 update, so I figured that it was a bug of some sort that got fixed.
Oh well, I'm glad to know that at least I wasn't the only one to notice that!
Thread: Rendaring Trouble of POSER7E | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Are you using Poser Pro (either with or without SR1)? I've noticed this same goofiness after I started using Poser Pro. Never got it at all in Poser 7 SR2.1. If you are using Poser Pro, check your Firefly render settings and see if the HDRI option is checked. I seemed to remember that problem would crop up if it was enabled, but stopping-and-starting the render over seemed to correct it.
I think the problem might have been corrected in SR1, I know I haven't encountered it since getting the SR1 update.

mmmm...search engine about five years ago while looking for free Poser content after getting a copy of Poser 4. Been around on and off ever since, mostly lurking in the shadows ;-)
