Long time to respond, but I was the author of the hotel hallway in post #11. Clue as to how to make the model more useful would be appreciated. Thanks Max

Thanks for the comments Cliff. You're right, the gothic image doesn't really show what kind of things can be produced - it's also a bit too dark to see what's going on! I'll try to create some other examples over the next few days and then post some screenshots (or links to them). I did try to post a response to my earlier thread on improving room renders (in this forum and the technical forum), but the browser munched it and I didn't feel up to typing it all in again at the time! Thanks again, Max
Thread: Modular house WIP | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Ah - I have been doing a search and have come across this old thread. Hopefully it's not so old that no one will reply!
I am in the process of creating some room 'figures' for Poser and am trying to work out the best method of getting some feedback before I release any products. Examples of some of the geometry I have created can be found in my gallery and an example obj model created a while ago can be downloaded from my freestuff area.
Now, I would really welcome some feedback on what I have done / am doing. However, placing something in the freestuff area results in loads of downloads but no feedback - which is great for others, but not so helpful for me when I want to know what's good / bad / missing. Given this, I have decided that a better idea is to give some free examples to a few users who are prepared to give me some feedback in return.
Out of interest, the geometry for the rooms is created in a Poser compatible format automatically by my own room modelling and creation tool. I have spent a few years working hard to make the rooms as realistic and detailed as possible and also, more recently, working at overcoming the limitations of Poser's render engine (arrgh!). The advantage of all this hard work is that I can now create detailed, Poser compatible rooms very quickly (within the limits of the engine). However, I need help to learn what people want, what is good about the output and what is bad. (Unfortunately, the software is very user unfriendly and can therefore only be used by me - but the results are what most people would be interested in)
Finally, I agree with the other comments made here. Lighting scenes in Poser is not easy. The lights and shadows are hard to control - however, I suspect many people pose stuff it Poser and then render elsewhere.
Comments / ideas appreciated.
Regards,
Max

First of all, thanks for all the feedback from everyone. There are some excellent points in the replies.
As I have written the software that creates the model - I am the one who has to sort out the problems with the export to Poser! It seems from Ajax's comments (and others) that a few of my solutions need to be refined. Particularly the code that splits all the vertices to overcome shading problems and the use of double sided polygons.
ernyoka1 : What are material zones and how can they be used to make sections of the model invisible?
Other peoples comments have helped me understand how people might want to use a room in Poser. Also it nice to know I'm not the only one cursing Poser's lighting setup!
who3d : I realise that this is a support forum not a product development forum and know that some might feel my questions are inappropriate. So, thanks to everyone for their help and thank you for not getting annoyed about my questions.
who3d, your insight into the TV film approach to scenes and lighting was really useful. Many thanks for this feedback. I guess the film guys have solved a lot of similar issues.
Finally, I am glad people like the look of the room. It makes me feel that I am not wasting my time pursuing this project.
Regards - Max

A bit late but the -1.#IND probably indicates an ill defined result, for example if you were to try to calculate 1/0, this is ill-defined and often produces a division by zero error. The upshot is that these normals cannot be calculated (effectively the result is nonsense).

Thanks once again leather-guy. These ideas are great - it's also good to know that you feel a prop is the way to go. There are a number of elements missing from my models at the moment that I would need to add, including door and window handles and light fittings (as you suggest). In actual fact, the way the model is textured and built at the moment requires separate texture maps for the floor, ceiling, walls, coving, skirting, etc. So that will come for 'free'. I just need to work out how to overcome Poser's weird shading of flat polygons. I seem to recall that if they are split into separate parts, Poser handles them much better. The idea of creating interchangeable elements is also interesting. However, I need to find out how this can be done. Thanks once again for all your help. Regards, Max

Thanks for the feedback leather-guy. These are just the kind of comments I was looking for. I had always felt that a Poser ready product was where the strongest appeal was. It is unfortunate that Poser has such a strange way of rendering objects. However, I'll investigate what is required to create a Poser ready / friendly product. Out of interest though, how do you think it is best to handle the scene in Poser. Should one side/wall be removed to make positioning the camera easy? Also, should the model be imported as a prop or as a 'poseable figure'? Any ideas? Regards, Max

Geometry is all mine (created by my own application), textures are from a third party commercial texture library and some textures that were given away on a magazine a while ago. Rendered in Cinema 4DXL, apologies about my poor taste in decor!

Hi, This discussion brings up some interesting points about how different English speaking countries refer to different part of a room. For example I am used to referring to the skirting board, dado rail, picture rail and coving - however, Americans may know these by another name? Also, I am also working on some 3D models of rooms. Does anyone out there have particular requirements or needs? What kind of room, style and features are people looking for? Regards, Max

ShadowWind, Hopefully you intend to render the hallway in a program that isn't Poser, since I have found Poser's rendering of 'normal' 3D files to be awful. Things can be improved with some preprocessing of the geometry (for example, splitting polygon groups and deleting 'blank' walls), but it's frustrating to have to do it. Do you intend to import the Poser figures in another 3D program for rendering or are you going to use Poser? Regards, Max

Right thanks for the example image - I'll have a go at doing something like this, then post the results. If you like the look of it I can send you the .obj file.

I am considering creating my first product (.obj files) and I was considering a set of hallways. However, since I have not created anything before I would like help refining a product first to know whether it's something that would sell. Can you give me an idea of the look you are after - i.e. a photo or a url? Then I might be able to have a go ... Thanks, Max

Oh - just read the comments regarding the Poser 5 rendering engine being the same as the Poser 4 engine so disregard that question ! Max
