The issue is solved! I'm leaving this here in case someone else wondered too. Uninstalling the software and all the content, cleaning registries manually as well as running ccleaner and updating Daz studio did the trick.

But how does it sit in relation to the figure - is it very close to the skin, or is there a gap?
Close to the skin.

When the figure isn't posed, it looks perfect. Sits on the model well, isn't distorted, no poke through of any kind. In the picture above I'm raising G8's arm with "Arms up-down" dial in Pose controls, on the Parameter's tab, the effect is same with Bend dials for selecting arm, and when I lift it by grabbing it in the viewport. By "underlying mesh" I suppose you're referring to G8F's mesh? it's fine, there's nothing wrong with it.

It could be the weight maps, it could be the need for JCMs (morphs triggered by joint bends), it could be a mesh issue. There probably isn't a one-size-fits-all response to this, or most other questions. A good start would be to post some images showing the issue.
I didn't post an image, because the thread is really not about this particular issue, but just asking if there's a step by step tutorial one could follow that addresses everything that is supposed to be addressed. I'm clearly not the first to have this problem, but there I didn't find a solution. And it happens with whatever I have to learn about Daz Studio and Poser. It's tedious and becomes very discouraging after a while.
And here's this particular problem
Thread: Poser Custom Morph Editing | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thank you so much for the extensive info, Boni. By Morph ID I meant PMD ID which is an editable value in Binary Morph Editor by Dimension 3D. It's also an ignorable one, so I suppose I could leave that alone as well, but I'd like to understand the structure, that's all.

I'm trying to figure out Poser character morphs anatomy. I want to create a few custom morphs and was wondering about PMD ID and UUID... Thingies What are they? What sort of values should I assign there? What are the best practices etc? I'd be very grateful for any details.
Thread: Poser user really frustrated with store contents... | Forum: MarketPlace Customers
So, I wrote a sizable post here yesterday and the deleted it by accident. It was too long for me to replicate, but here's the short version of what I said:
All that said, I still have planned to expand my future content creation to include Poser, but that's not due to developers at Smith Micro doing anything that would encourage me.

Thank you for your reply, donnena. I've also found that if I set up all the groups in my modeling software before exporting the obj, the groups I set up there show up in Poser and aren't messed up after editing the .pp2 file. It may be a useful note to others who are doing this and might want to try the same thing, that I also edit the exported obj file in a text editor to name the groups manually. If your software refuses to let you edit the node names, that's the way to go.

I found this in General Contest Rules: "For those members who submit an entry to two or more categories, only one (1) prize package is available per person across all Halloween Contest categories." :D

Quote - Try removing all smoothing groups, you will see a line if adjacent areas are within different smoothing groups. Then import into Poser with the "Make normals consistant" option selected.
Thanks for the tip. Although I hear Maya doesn't have smoothing groups? o.O Perhaps you thought of Max? Your advice still helped me though, I turned smoothing off in Maya's exporting window, and apparently that did the trick. Now I can sleep at night again. So thanks :)))

Quote - Just a guess - I don't know Maya...
Mirroring flips normals. Poser doesn't like adjacent polygons with disagreement about what is "inside" vs. "outside".
Make your normals consistent and correct and it should work.
Thanks for reply. I've checked the normals in Maya now, they're consistent I think. Nothing looks flipped, they're all facing in the correct direction. This has given me a headache :s
