Not to rain on the parade but there's some things you should consider beyond everyone's comments about rendering etc. Firstly, the mac version of Vue is very buggy. Expect crashes and weird anomolies. Secondly, Nvidia cards and Vue don't like each other very much on the Mac. Vue is much happier with an ATI card on the mac (it's OpenGL issues). Thirdly, Vue doesn't work with Panther (OSX 10.3) - yet. So you'll have to use OSX 10.2.x. Finally, Vue can really bog down on the mac with complicated scenes. Moving/resizing, etc. will start to take forever with lots of objects present (even with the layer hidden). All that being said, your machine should be beefy enough to handle it (especially thanks to the generous ram). It's unfortunate that there's no Demo available as you're taking a bit of a gamble with the Nvidia aspect. I've heard of Mac users with Nvidia cards having lots of issues with OpenGL & Vue. Hopefully it'll work out for you. Lastly - If realism is what you're after then I'd like to suggest you take a look at Terragen. It's not good for close up vegitation work like Vue but for distance Terrain shots, etc. it's fantastic and the realism surpases Vue. Also the Mac version of Terragen is dirt cheap, rock solid and fast. Be warned however, it's very unconventional (as far as 3D apps go) and has a significant learning curve. But check it out - you may like the results. http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ Personally, I use both on my DP G4/450 & ATI Radeon 8500. E.

How did you fix the problem??? Mine is still crashing in Panther and I cannot get it to work no matter what! Shed some light as to what you did? E.
Thread: Vue 4 & OSX 10.3 (Panther) | Forum: Vue
Well, after some more testing I'm sad to say that Vue 4 will not work in Panther. I doubt e-on will address this either as their only interest now probably lies in Vue Pro. For those that are interested, here's the details: I was able to actually get Vue to startup without complaining about the serial number by copying over 2 pref files from /Library/Application Support/. However, Vue crashes right after the splash screen and the loading is done. I imagine it has to do with the new OpenGL as Apple has broken a lot of stuff with it's new OpenGL implimentation. Many games now no longer work either in Panther. So there you have it. I guess I have to wait until I have the $ to buy Vue Pro and hope to god E-on has their sh*t together and has it working in Panther (doubt it). At least a patch within the next 2 years would be good roll eyes. If any Mac user has Vue Pro and gets Panther when it comes out - please let the rest of us know how it works! For now I guess it's back to Terragen and Bryce. Thanks, E.

Yeah, we all need G5's! Personally, I'm waiting for Rev2 of the G5's, which works out because it'll be half a year before I have enough money saved for one :P Good luck with getting Vue working! E.

For what it's worth: I'm using Vue 4 on a Dual G4/450 w/ 640mb's ram & OSX 10.2.8. I have it installed to the Applications directory and I use full on openGL. I've used it both with a Radeon 8500 & Radeon 7500. I have had virtually no problems. I have yet to have one single "freeze". I've had a couple of crashes related to doing things with the atmosphere, but overall the crashes are probably only about 1% or 2% of my Vue usage. Now, that being said... I'm just a straight up Vue user (for now). What that means: I don't import anything, I don't use Poser, I don't do animation. Is your iMac one of the older G3 models or one of the newer G4 models? This could easily be a G3 processor issue as it lacks altivec, etc. Considering it's 500mhz and you're using an ATI Rage 128, I'd assume it's one of the old iMacs that uses the G3. I think minimum specs for Vue 4 are a G4 processor (someone correct me if I'm wrong). It could also be something to do with your Video card not liking the latest OpenGL drivers from Apple? I'm not too sure... On a side note... have you tried out Terragen? I don't like pushing Terragen in the Vue forum but it works great on G3 processors and is rock solid stable. I use it on my 500mhz iBook all the time. Terragen isn't a Vue replacement but it's a lot of fun and magic in it's own way. E.
Thread: Vue4 Pro Mac - impressions after about a week. | Forum: Vue
That's really good to hear. As a Mac Vue user I'm thankful for your post. From the sounds of it, it seems a lot better (read: stable). Not being able to save new species of plants is rather disturbing to me but I guess it will be something they will address soon enough. Have you tried backward compatibility at all? IE: The mac version of Vue 4 can't open Vue 3 files, etc. I presume this can't open Vue 3 files either but I'd assume it opens Vue 4 files perfectly. Thanks, E.

Ahh! Ok sorry - again I'm new and didn't realize there was a "backroom" of sorts. I'll investigate further. Thanks, E.
