Subject: Vue 4 & OSX 10.3 (Panther)

With the nearing release of Panther (7 days?) I decided to give Vue 4 a whirl with the Panther GM release we have at work. Things did not go well (surprise surprise). Vue simply refuses to install (the installer crashes). I also tried copying over a pre-installed version of vue from OSX 10.2.7 - that didn't work either as then it complained about the serial number. I'm going to try and hunt down the pref files with the serial and try moving them across as well to see if that will work. Hopefully if I can finally reach the point where the program starts up everything will work correctly. I know they've done some significant changes to OpenGL. Note: as I don't have Vue Pro I could not test that - it may work? I doubt it though knowing E-On's lousy Mac support. All other software I tested works fine (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Terragen, Cinema4D, etc.). Haven't tried Poser5 yet. Will post if I figure out a workaround to get it happening. PS. Panther is awesome btw :) E.

Well, after some more testing I'm sad to say that Vue 4 will not work in Panther. I doubt e-on will address this either as their only interest now probably lies in Vue Pro. For those that are interested, here's the details: I was able to actually get Vue to startup without complaining about the serial number by copying over 2 pref files from /Library/Application Support/. However, Vue crashes right after the splash screen and the loading is done. I imagine it has to do with the new OpenGL as Apple has broken a lot of stuff with it's new OpenGL implimentation. Many games now no longer work either in Panther. So there you have it. I guess I have to wait until I have the $ to buy Vue Pro and hope to god E-on has their sh*t together and has it working in Panther (doubt it). At least a patch within the next 2 years would be good roll eyes. If any Mac user has Vue Pro and gets Panther when it comes out - please let the rest of us know how it works! For now I guess it's back to Terragen and Bryce. Thanks, E.

Oh jeez that's scary. I fully intend to update to Panther when it comes out. I hope they update Vue D'Esprit for it pronto!

There really is no excuse for this level of non functionality. If developers followed the OSX guidelines, then there would be less issues. Yes some software apps need to be patched when a new version of the OS comes out, but they are usually to fix minor things. Vue 4 not working at all in Panther is not good for e-on's reputation. It's bad enough that at the WWDC this past June, VUE4 was used as a bad example of non standard installer and application programming, now the same software doesn't work. WOW! Hopefully e-on will release a patch and fix these issues, as 10.3 is going to be the new gold standard for OSX. EVERYTHING is faster in panther, especially the gui, this is going to attract many, many upgraders... -Paul
