I've noticed there's a difference in the way things look when you switch to SreeD for preview. Also, playing with the Hither setting on Camera can sometimes eliminate the appearance of "Pre Render Pokethrough".
Sam , thanks I'll try shifting to SreeD. It's been set at Open GL, I think by default, but I may have changed it accidentally. I've been keeping the Yon setting high because that seems to allow for rendering shadows when all else fails. I'll see if changing the Hither setting changes anything.

What render setting are you using? Preview? You might want to check your mat room settings for your eyes ... the transparency settings don't seem to be coming through in either one and that shows up more in the render than before. In Preview mode you will never get natural shadows or true texture maps. You would have to render in Firefly to do that. What effect are you seeking in the final render? Different monitors should have NO effect on poke throughs.
Boni, for the top example that's just the preview of the guy in the foreground and the two women runners, to show you the weird effects I'm talking about. (all the other figures are layers of previous rendering and touch-up) That's what I have to work with, and it's maddening not to know what's the poke-through and what skin will disappear upon render. The second image was rendered with firefly, then touched up heavily, and the end result isn't exactly what I wanted it to look like, but as there are over 1,200 panels in the graphic novel I'm working on and I'm 4 years behind, I can't be too perfectionist if I want to finish it in my lifetime.
Just a couple questions about the nudity warning- Do I have to click that every time I answer a post in this thread, or is the fact you (or somebody else at renderosity) has already clicked it for the thread cover it? I had no idea the skin showing through their tee shirts would trigger that. Sorry I was so clueless.
My second question is: Would a picture of a mother breast feeding her baby require a warning?

the only editing I did on the guy in the foreground after rendering was draw in some perspiration on his tee shirt and fill in for his collars where I left those invisible so they wouldn't poke through.

OOps. I just discovered that I'd been tryng to attach .bmp's, which are about 15 times as big as .jpg's. I always export renders in .bmp's because the old (circa 1998) photo editing program I use will not recognize .jpg renders from poser, but I always convert those .bmp's later to .jpgs on the same program, if that makes any sense. But I'd forgotten to do that. Let's see if this works... OK, here's before and after rendring of the guy in the foreground and the two female figures. All the other figures are layers from pervious renderings, like we discussed. I often got body parts sticking through poser 7 clothes when using other monitors, but never those eyeballs popping out of the skull! I did a lot of touch-up and drew the hair over the poser 4 hair on the blond woman, but I didn't need to edit their faces any. This is from my graphic novel Varinka, which I'm turning into a video slide show, with music and short animations.
Thread: What is a "separate" process in rendering? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hi seachnasaigh, Once again I couldn't seem to attach files, so I'm trying another browser (was using seamonkey, I'm on firefox now...) Here's the screen grabs you asked for: Wow, now I see a buch of gibberish, but still no pictures. Anyway, it looks like I've got a couple free ram slots. Depending on what you tell me, I'll probably ask a guy who does all my tech work to add that ram. Thanks for helping me with this. (now let's see if any pictures show up when I post this...) JOhn

Thanks seachnasaigh, for your suggestion about Speccy. I'll download it and transfer it over to my windows 7 pc on a thumb drive. Hopefully they'll let me install it without demanding that I register it on line, like so many software vendors are doing nowadays. Even freeware.

P7 was 32bit and most household computers of that era were 32bit. In 32bit, each running process only gets 2GB of memory allotted (there is a "high address aware" trick, but that only gets you about another 1GB). Poser itself will need a chunk of memory just to hold the scene, and the 2GB memory limit applies to the total of P7 and Firefly. So, to avoid running out of memory when rendering, you have the option to run Firefly as its own process, separate from Poser 7. That allows Firefly its own 2GB of memory, while Poser 7 gets its own allotment.
Is your Windows 7 32bit or 64bit?
Which version of Windows 7 do you have?
How much memory is in your computer?
How much memory is your computer capable of reading? (This is determined by the main chipset on the motherboard)
Hi seachnasaigh, I think my pc is 32 bit, but I'm not sure. I looked in "My Computer" for the main drive, but can't find anything that will tell me what version it is. Oh, wait, I just found it in the control panel. I have to keep switching back and forth with a kvm switch because that pc is off line... OK, it's 32 bit, Windows 7 Home Premium, service pack 1, ..... with only 2G ram. @&$?!&%#@*&! The old windows xp pc I'd been using prior to getting this "better" one had 4g of ram, if memory serves me correctly! Now that I know how to check that, I'm going to boot it up and take a look. I'll probably go back to using it. A phenomenal old workhorse, it served me well for more than a decade.

"... Another suggestion. Starting with the farthest "layer" of the scene, use whatever camera view is final view and render ... NO background and save as .png, do this with each forward layer until you get the closest. bringing in ONLY the items for each layer per render. Next Place ONE sided low-poly squares on each layer's position and texture them with each render making them each "billboards". Keep the final closest render 3d. We do trees like this all the time ... it has a good chance of working. Haven't tried it, but this is my theory and suggestion. This way you will get true shadows from each layer ... if you light it properly. That will be the tricky part.
Boni, thanks for that suggestion about the low poly squares. I'd used boxes for that, but never the low poly squares. Maybe they'll look better than my renders on the boxes.

Render the figures in their Pose one by one and then put them on planes in any graphics app (Gimp, PS ...) cut them out and make the plane transparent
Transparency map
Put the planes in the Scene and render, it renders very quick
This render with 24 V4 took only seconds.
Thanks, that's how I'd do a standing crowd, but what I'm trying to depict is a tangled heap of dead extraterrestrials

Seeing as they are background figures, why not use some of the old Poser humans? There are even some low poly versions in there, should you wish to go the whole hog. Granted, many of Poser's native figures look like mutants and/or road accident victims but if they're in the background, it shouldn't be too noticeable.
Thanks, I'm using Poser 4 female, actually.

You can try to render from back to front, and use the render as background for the next render.
Thanks, I always do that in scenes with more than four figures, but the one I'm working on involves a whole tangle of bodies (corpses of extraterrestrials made from poser 4 female, actually)

The only cost is not just the .cr2 files. Textures make up a large portion of the memory. To reduce the graphics use, first try to use the same texture on each background figure, poser will only keep one copy in memory. Also since they are for background, use a graphics ap to reduce the resolution. reducing the maps from 4k to 2k uses 1/4 the memory
Bill
Good idea. I'll try that. (I'm only using a small ,jpg on each .3ds object, but I can always scale that down.)

Thanks, I'll do that. I really thought poser needed an exorcist, the way it's been tormenting me.
