I tried the Bump Map solution and got pretty good results. I'll also give the Render/Alpha Channel idea a shot, and see which one gives me better results. Thank you all! I'm sure one of these two ideas will do the trick.

Thanks. There are two models there, but both are linked to a Yahoo Group that no longer exists. You can't download the models without belonging to the group, and you can't log onto the group because it is defunct.

I'd like to have a go at this one, but I'm a little unsure of the rules. I take it that imported Poser figures are out. Does that apply to other imported models? Where do we post our entries? If there is an FAQ file on this, I couldn't find it. I think this is an excellent challenge: evoking emotion from a post-war street scene. I'm in!
