In defense of Carrara, I just received it the other day and used it for the first time (no experience with previous versions). Within the hour I cranked out the screenshot and first three images at:http://www.plugsnpixels.com/carrara.html
I have some experience with other terrain generating apps (Mojoworld, Vue, Terragen, Bryce), but not 3D modeling. But based on my initial experience with the new Carrara, I would pursue learning any proper 3D with it and not any other.
