Yeah, rendering AVI seems to be a verrry old issue with Vue (IFAIK since Vue6)...
So, the best choice (really) is to render to some 'still format' (TGA, TIFF those can handle alpha if you need it) then compile in any video editor (VirtualDub the simplest one).

Have you tried to save to a sequence of images (bmp or tga or something like) and NOT to avi?

What's your workflow in 3ds max? I mean, how do you set up your scene?
And - yes, mental ray Renderer is the ONLY one to render vue scenes from max.
And VUE File Renderer has NOTHING common with Vue xStream. (It's just an an editable ASCII file format).

Always have some ideas about (primitive) modeling in Vue, as it's the only package I have (not mention blender, but I'm just started my researches with it).
Can somebody point me how to (where) publish my picture ? Well, rules of challenge?
