This problem happened to me on two different boxes both using different makes and versions of GeForce cards. Only sure fire solution I've found is to ditch the manufacturers' drivers and use the latest generic nVidia drivers. I never use all the bells and whistles the likes of Asus and Gainward include anyway.
Generic drivers seem to work under both Win2K SP2 and XP Pro. Not sure about XP Home as it seems an entirely different beast to Pro.
When you find a solution please post it!

Thread: (LONG PR ALERT) Mover 4 Brings Advanced Animation to Vue d | Forum: Vue
Just caught up with this thread: should have read it better as I would have realised about "one frame per machine". Doh. Sorry. In the UK, SMP machine prices have dropped to an all time low. I could upgrade one of my boxes to a dual Athlon machine for an outlay of circa 400GBP. It's bound to be cheaper in the US. Vue 4 runs fine on my dual PIII 1Ghz box but does anyone know if Vue and / or Mover 4 is optimised for Pentiums or AMD's or both? Finally, "cowing" the machine? Why a cow? 'Cos it's "milking" CPU's over the network? Or is it derived from "renderfarm"? I think the public should know. :-) Mark

I do not have Mover 4 (yet) but in theory it might be psssible to render a two frame animation using RenderVue and then split out the frames using a utlity like AVIedit (see URL). That way all the networking power is used to render your frame. An added bonus is that you can provide a couple or several alternative poster compositions from one rendering session. Just a thought. As an aside, how much Network bandwidth does RenderVue use? I'd hate to slaughter everyone else's connectivity with the latest masterpiece. MarkThread: Creating Textures | Forum: Vue
Many thanks to everyone for the advice. Looks like I'll be busy for a quite a while sorting out which program to use and then trying to master it! Cheers, Mark
Thread: OT - KVM switches to help with multi-machine set ups | Forum: Vue
Guitta, Pay the extra and get USB KVM box for USB peripherals. They do not work well with a USB to PS/2 adaptor. I know because I've tried! Zoon, Re: your tip on video cables. What sort of degradation were you getting? I'm running a four box KVM set up and having problems with screen image quality although it could be the monitor dying. I am using Belkin's own PS/2 / VGA lead sets. Is it really worth trying the expensive VGA leads? Staring at a screen for long periods when using Vue is giving me serious headaches.

If you can afford it get Lightwave. Then add Poser 4 and the Pro Pack which has a Lightwave plug in. Last but not least, get Ozone 2.0, the Vue D'Esprit plug-in for Lightwave. Well, you did say you would be able to purchase any and all the software. :-))
Ideally run the whole lot on a G4 Mac under OS.X
More realistically...
I use a dual PIII 1Ghz box with 1Gb RAM running
Paint Shop Pro for 2D stuff (highly underrated it is too)
Amapi 6 for modelling (now on offer for 149GBP in the UK)
Poser 4 and the Pro Pack for people
Vue D'Esprit for rendering
Whatever you get, have fun with it!

I recently transferred Vue from a Win98se box with an Asus Geforce (1) card to a Win2KPro box with a Gainward Geforce 3 card. Vue 4 worked fine with both but I did *not* use the manufacturer's drivers supplied with the cards. Always download the latest drivers from the nVidia site and you should get full OpenGL support in Vue. Happy rendering, MarkThread: Why I'm not holding my breath waiting for Poser 5 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Tend to agree with gryffnn and MallenLane: it's the mass market / mid-range products that will influence prices far more so than the "big boys". For instance, Cinema 3D v5 is currently free with UK mag PC Format. That would not have happened a couple of years ago.
I confess to mixed feelings on the Pro Pack concept: not sure if I'd prefer a slightly more expensive product that included figure creation. Hmmmmm....
I'm a little more interested in how the Python side of things will develop as this seems hugely powerful but underused at present.

This was just a test? Looks great. The table top is exactly right for thick glass with maybe a slight "smoked" effect? Like it. Mark

Many thanks for the URL. Looks like it will fit the bill nicely. Time to get a-rendering. Personally I think that Steve Bullmer is the real business brains at MicroShaft(R). I use the term brains loosely (see URL). And am I the only who thinks he looks like Major Winchester from *M*A*S*H*? MarkThread: ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Forum: Vue

Bloodsong, you have my sympathy. If you have a GeForce card use the raw drivers form nVidia's site and *not* the drivers supplied by the card manuacturer. If anyone's looking for a virus product that acts nicely and intalls / uninstalls / shuts down cleanly for rendering, try AVG (URL above). AVG is slower than Norton's but, according to UK mag PCPlus (and my experience), is equally as effective at stopping viruses. It's free to home users too. Go get it!Thread: ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Forum: Vue
I'd forgotten about Mike Lin's Startup utility and it is very good. It works fine on Windows NT and 2000 too. Unfortunately it will not unscramble a registry once Norton has been uninstalled or, worse, hung during a live update. Not even regedit would save one of my boxes. A plague on the house of Symantec, I say, a plague! BTW liked the Yukon pictures.
Thread: ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Forum: Vue
Sorry caught up with this thread a bit late. I hate it when the technology gets in the way of the creativity.
I work in IT and have just finished re-configuring my home network and that of a client's. Neither contains any Norton products at all. After testing and using all versions of Norton AntiVirus, Firewall and Utilities released over the last year, I have ditched the lot. The hassle involved with Norton apps far outweighs any benefits.
Bad news: none of the Norton products uninstall cleanly under 98, 98SE or 2000. Believe me I have been through the pain barrier with uninstalling Norton stuff. It sucks, big time. It also runs processes as services so that they are not always visible in Task Manager. Same goes for McAfee's stuff too.
My advice is to 1. back up everything important, 2. reinstall the OS and all your apps., 3. reinstall your data, 4. use ZoneAlarm firewall (www.zonelabs.com) and AVG AntiVirus (www.grisoft.com). Both free, both very effective, both shut down cleanly for rendering. :-))
For good measure go to www.bysoft.com and download their excellent RAM cleaner program, "FreeRAM". It's free!
For the record I do not work for nor am I affiliated with any of these companies. Recent experience has taught me that this stuff works.

Your site works perfectly in Opera 6. Your abstracts are very nice: especially some of the colour combinations especially the pink / blue scenes. Mark
