THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: All right, here are the rogue challenge rules

draculaz ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 8:28 PM · edited Wed, 12 February 2025 at 5:34 PM

Okay, first off, my warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas to you all. Secondly, I don't want this rogue challenge to detract from the official one in any way. This started off with an idea of mine that the best possible challenge would be the creation of a God of Bryce (pure brycean render that embodies all that's best of the program). in bryce we trust and all that. After a beer, a couple of cigarettes and a look at what some of you can dish out, and that went downhill fast. So I kept myself to the only thing I knew I could do decently well, and that was simplistic space scenes that had just a slight bit of realism in them. Jausselin messaged me about being interested, and between the two of us we figured out that the challenge had to be a space scene that was not necessarily entirely bryce, but rather used the program's amazing rendering powers for good. not evil. :) SO! Imports are fine as long as the meshes are yours and it's rendered in Bryce. I was surprised to see a fair number of you jump at this but like I said, I wouldn't want to make it into something too big or too important because I don't have that kind of mandate from the moderators or the community. So let's keep this nice and reactionary please :) Drac

oh, and as a post scriptum, there is no deadline as of yet. Consider the end of January as a tentative one :)

Space scene is a very wide and open concept. Why not make the theme a bit more focussed? That should really get us thinking and applying ourselves!

humorix ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 10:41 PM

I mean...a space war (we've already had that as a challenge concept), a space station (Bambam where art thou? ;), War of the worlds, Harvesting Space, The neo-colonists, Mothership, The space armada,...whatever! But one topic, which really piques our interests and to which we all apply ourselves! What say?

draculaz ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 11:00 PM

Sure. But I think that picking a specific topic kills creativity. The idea, at least in my mind, is to see how much my skill has developed. Sure, setting and plot are important, but the idea that should transcend is modelling and rendering skills. Personally I was going to make a "platform of peace" where different races came to discuss treaties and what not. different ships stationed there, kinda like a galactic UN, a space city of vast proportions.

There was a fun one I did a while ago that was a space anime challenge. It didn'y have to be 2d but it had to have that asnime style. Guess it dosn't matter since this isn't a formal challenge, but it would be nice to have some sort of focus so then we can improve specifically in one or two areas. I always go back to the quote "Jack of all trades, master of none."

humorix ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 11:05 PM

Well draculaz, I've always found that the more focussed you are the better creativity is channelised! Skill definitely get better honed that way. Also if its to be a challenge...or even a rogue one...it'll definitely level the playing fields!

okay, how about this: "peace in humanity's grasp" ?

humorix ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 11:40 PM

Hmmmmmmmmmmm how about putting up 3-4 topics and all us participants taking avote? :P Sowwwy to complicate thingz Draculaz...but its all in the spirit of the season! :P

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 11:51 PM

I like the peace thing, in fact I was toying about doing an animation on the subject.

1. peace in humanity's grasp

  1. debbie does babylon 5
  2. christmas in space
    4. the space pilgrims
  3. famous space battles
    6. mirror into the soul (space scene)
    7. the foundation
    8. children of space
    9. the naked sun
  4. how ET saw my pee pee

5 out of those should be quite good and give you enough to start on. again, let me stress the fact that the point of this is to challenge talent and know-how. our imaginations know no boundaries, and frankly, it is wrong to tresspass on other people's vision of the future. it's better to let imagination fly on the wings of talent then to corner and box it under a title. that is just me :)

How about: ". . . To go where no man has gone before . . . " That wouldn't necessarily involve a space scene ... - TJ

that actually reminds me of a cheap cover in my country of the naked sun by asimov. it looked like a man from bellow and something like an f14 from above ;) but gentlemen, how about... A SPACE SCENE? Whatever you you like. I won't say more on this subject.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 27 December 2002 at 8:07 AM

Can I join in too. I don't know how far my modelling skills have come since the "Planet X" challenge but I'd like to see if I have improved enough to compete. Sounds like fun anyway and I'm always game for a laugh. Catlin

Rayraz ( ) posted Fri, 27 December 2002 at 8:20 AM

Ofcoarse you can join us with the challenge. It's open to everyone as far as I know. But since it's a skill contest I (personally) do expect everyone to show of his/her skills to the max. So let us see what stunning models you can create Catlin. I'm looking forward to some competition crushing modelling from you. Bring it on!
